TBN Takes Programming Higher With New HD Production Studio Designed and Built by TV Magic

SAN DIEGO — Jan. 2, 2007 – TV Magic, a full-service consulting and broadcast engineering company, has completed the design and build of an HD production studio for Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) at its flagship Costa Mesa, Calif., facility. The six-camera HD studio built by TV Magic supports the network‘s popular “Praise the Lord” television program, among others, which is broadcast daily to millions of viewers worldwide.

“TBN has been providing viewers with the very best in quality faith-based programming for more than 30 years now, and this new HD-capable studio illustrates our commitment to delivering a memorable television experience with every broadcast,” said TBN Vice President Paul Crouch Jr. “Cable providers and viewers alike have been demanding programming shot in HD, and TV Magic provided the technical skill and expertise to put TBN on the cutting-edge of television production. Our goal at TBN is to offer the best inspirational programming to a constantly growing audience through various cable and television formats, and the services provided by TV Magic are key to this effort.”

TV Magic equipped the studio, now optimized for shooting at a 16:9 aspect ratio, with equipment including six Grass Valley LDK4000 HD cameras equipped with Canon HD lenses, a Grass Valley Kalypso-2 HD production switcher, Panasonic DVCPRO-HD VTR‘s, Miranda terminal gear, Ikegami CRT monitors, and an SSL C-200 audio console. The main studio has space for a studio audience to attend tapings such as “Praise The Lord,” and special events such as the network‘s fundraising telethons. TV Magic installed the SSL audio recording console along with eight remote stage boxes, linked over a fiber interface to eliminate hum and preserve audio quality.

TBN‘s new HD capabilities also allow for shoots filmed throughout the facility grounds and gardens, with HD footage sent back to the studio control room over an extensive triax network. A campus-wide wireless audio and intercom system was installed to complement this “shoot anywhere” approach, enabling TBN to perform remote shoots in HD and using 5.1 surround sound. The engineering team at TV Magic also met the challenge of blending TBN‘s legacy SD footage and equipment with new HD systems while keeping all signals timed correctly. As a result, the network was able to leverage some of its existing resources in making the transition to HD production.

Located just 10 miles from TBN‘s new master control facility in Tustin, the Costa Mesa HD production studio will serve as the primary feeder of the network‘s HD content over a digital fiber network. TBN‘s HD production studio made its official debut during TBN‘s Spring Telethon in April and continues to be used at least twice a week creating the “Praise” program which is beamed all over North America and literally around the world via 57 satellites.
