TV Magic Completes Automation of 32 TBN Affiliate Stations

SAN DIEGO — Feb. 5, 2007 — TV Magic, a full-service consulting and broadcast engineering company, has completed a station automation project for 32 affiliates of the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), the world‘s largest religious network. The project, completed within the space of just 18 months, not only allows TBN to meet FCC compliance standards for digital television, but also enables unattended operation of these stations with the ability to receive network feeds and insert local programming, advertising, and interstitials into the broadcast output.

“With our transition to digital broadcasting, we needed to update our affiliate station infrastructures to meet FCC DTV criteria for EAS, PSIP, and TSID compliance,” said Ben Miller, vice president of engineering at TBN. “We worked with TV Magic to solve this issue and took the project one step further to create a solution that would automate the unattended multicasting of five TBN channels.

“TV Magic designed a cost-effective system that satisfied our engineering requirements and then proceeded, over a very tight timeframe, to design, build, ship, and integrate each system into the unique environment presented by each station. It was a remarkable effort, and it has made a dramatic impact on the efficiency of our operations and the quality of our on-air product.”

The integrated broadcast system designed by TV Magic incorporates – in just two standard racks – Sundance Digital‘s Titan automation system (customized for TBN), along with Miranda terminal gear and Imagestore channel branding processors, Masstech loggers for station logging, media servers from 360 Systems and Omneon, and Keywest Technology logo insertion and EAS systems.

Each facility now boasts a multichannel server with ingest and playout capability, branding with squeezeback functionality, a character generator, logo insertion, and EAS, PSIP, and TSID compliance – all controlled through a comprehensive automation system. Installed at stations throughout the United States, from New York to Florida to Washington and Hawaii, all 32 systems also feature Miranda‘s iControl monitoring software, which gives TBN the capacity to develop remote monitoring and control from TBN‘s network operations facility in Tustin, Calif.

“The automation of all TBN affiliate stations presented us with a technical challenge in designing a system we could adapt to all 32 facilities‘ existing infrastructures, as well as a significant logistical challenge in getting those automation systems installed and deployed within a compact time frame,” said Gus Allmann, TV Magic‘s vice president of engineering. “We‘re confident that this flexible station automation system will support TBN‘s current broadcast goals and facilitate even more sophisticated control capabilities down the road.”
