CAPTURE STATION FROM ELECTROSONIC USED FOR DAILIES AND FEATURE SCREENINGS BY ASCENT MEDIA
Media and entertainment industry leader Ascent Media Group is using the MS9200CP Capture Station/Player from Electrosonic to encode and deliver dailies and to screen completed feature films. With more than 70 facilities worldwide, Ascent Media provides solutions for creating, managing and distributing content to major motion-picture studios, independent producers, broadcast networks, cable channels, advertising agencies and others.
The MS9200CP Capture Station/Player is a simple to use, highly-integrated system dedicated to capturing MPEG 2 transport streams from a broadcast encoder and distributing them to the client over a LAN or WAN.
Ascent Media has used MS9200CP and MS9200P-based dailies systems on movies such as “Gameplan,” “Invincible,” “Deja Vu,” and “Freedom Writers”. Systems have been installed at major studios and on location in calibrated screening rooms, offices, hotel rooms and other venues.
“We transfer film dailies with metadata to HD at Ascent Media facilities, encode them to MPEG, and then we use the player on location for screenings,” says Vice President Feature Services Steven B. Cohen. “This allows us to screen dailies in more convenient places and gives clients virtually unlimited access to footage.”
“Using the proprietary software we wrote, clients can also view dailies in a random-access fashion,” Cohen continued. “We transfer the whole telecine master tape, but our software enables us to identify positions on the file to locate footage. Then we can develop specific playlists and parse out subclip files for individual access. It is a very useful tool for production and post, especially if there are multiple cameras. It really eases the process.”
Cohen explains that Ascent Media puts large RAID arrays on location to give clients access to material. “The Capture Station/Player serves a very unique purpose, and people seem quite happy with it,” he reports.
