Triveni Digital SkyScraper Helps UEN Eliminate Educational Boundaries for Youth in Custody

PRINCETON, N.J. — April 3, 2007 – Triveni Digital, a subsidiary of LG Electronics, today announced that the Utah Education Network (UEN) is installing the company‘s SkyScraper™ content-distribution platform to datacast educational media to youth in custody at 13 sites across the state. Supported by a Digital Services Fund Grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Youth In Custody program will facilitate delivery of specific educational content over UEN-TV‘s digital broadcast signal. Content includes UEN-TV‘s core curriculum for K-12 students; locally produced programming from UEN-TV sister station, KUED; select PBS programming; telecourses from the University of Utah; and GED and essential workplace skills training.

“Our mission at UEN is to provide the state of Utah with the best educational services available through technology, and this Triveni Digital SkyScraper installation will allow us to extend our reach to youth in custody, a segment of our population that has been underserved in terms of educational resources,” said KUEN Station Manager Laura Hunter. “With SkyScraper in place, we can provide essential resources for youth in the corrections system. The Triveni Digital solution offers the end-to-end functionality we need in a single well-established and well-integrated solution.”

Youth In Custody teachers, employed by the school districts, hold daily classes for the 1,200 youth treated at the 13 secure facilities, and completed coursework is credited to each youth‘s regular academic record. The SkyScraper system and associated Library Builder software tool will enable educational videos and other data to be downloaded to servers within the secure facilities, providing both teachers and students with better and broader on-demand access to instructional tools. The service lets administrators create educational packages for delivery to each facility and ensures that the resulting package will perform as intended when opened by the end user.

The SkyScraper system from Triveni Digital provides a platform for highly efficient point-to-multipoint content distribution and also allows for targeted point-to-point delivery. Through this solution, public TV stations such as UEN-TV can use available DTV bandwidth to aggressively support the public mission by providing efficient delivery of multimedia content for education, homeland security, and other public services.

“The efforts of UEN in making educational resources available to every segment of Utah‘s population have been remarkable,” said Ralph Bachofen, director of product management and marketing, Triveni Digital. “We‘re very pleased to play a part in this project, providing a cost-effective datacasting solution that allows for broader leveraging of the public broadcaster‘s tremendous educational resources for the benefit of all the state‘s students.”
