Spyders Help Oil and Gas Giant See Beneath The Earth’s Surface

WhitlockVista Systems‘ Spyders play a key role in three ultra high-resolution Cyviz Clusterwalls at a major international oil and gas company in Houston, Texas where they are used to view images deep beneath the earth‘s surface, such as sonar graphics depicting oil and gas deposits.

Seismic interpretation is critical to oil companies in determining exact drilling and exploration locations and identifying any potential challenges or obstacles. Efficient interpretation systems, like the one designed by The Whitlock Group, a systems integration firm, can help companies plan drilling projects more efficiently, decrease production time and dramatically increase ROI.

The Whitlock Group provided systems design and integration for the displays; two rooms feature 5×2 arrays and the main auditorium a 7×2 array. They enable full, native-resolution display of a multi-channel CPU cluster or a single CPU with multiple graphic outputs. Single-chip DLP® 1400×1050 projectors are employed, blended both horizontally and vertically 20%.

Spyder was selected to handle processing and windowing tasks because it was “the only processor solution with ultra high-resolution digital inputs, digital outputs, and source-overlapping capability,” notes Chris Lawson, Account Executive of The Whitlock Group. “Spyder has proven to be an extremely flexible system with excellent source overlapping and many features not commonly found in an image processor. Other advanced Spyder features used in the design and implementation of this system include storing background images, digital annotation capabilities across all channels and scaled image output.”

The main auditorium array has 16 inputs and 16 outputs, all DVI using four Spyder 300 Series processors. The two Clusterwalls images are 8‘x26‘, the Auditorium image size is 8‘x36‘ and resolution images 10 mega pixel and 14 mega pixel, respectively, are displayed. All Clusterwall arrays feature advanced control system with digital annotation, KVM switching, multiple sources and videoconferencing capabilities. All rooms can be cued up and monitored from one control room where all the multi-channel workstations are located.
