Soundcraft Vi6™ Decently Covers Barenaked Ladies

Popular Canadian band becomes first high-profile rock act to purchase its own Soundcraft digital desk

TORONTO, Canada – August 2007 – Barenaked Ladies (BNL), the Juno Award-winning alternative-rock band best known for its multi-platinum Stunt album and catchy hit singles “One Week” and “It’s All Been Done”, recently became the first truly high-profile recording/touring act in North America to purchase a Soundcraft Vi6™ digital live sound console.

“After having rented a Soundcraft Vi6 for nearly 200 dates–including the popular ‘Ships & Dip’ cruise back in January–the band simply liked the console enough to buy it for themselves,” notes BNL Production Manager Dean Roney.

Robin Billinton, BNL’s front-of-house engineer, adds that “sound quality, size, reliability, and affordability” were the chief reasons behind the recent purchase. “We have the standard 64-input/35-output Vi6 configuration with CAT5 running to the stage box,” he says. “Even on our first dates with the rented system the console sounded great, was easy to use, and took up very little truck space compared to an analog desk with processing racks, which left much more room for lighting and backline.”

Elegantly and intuitively laid out, the Soundcraft Vi6 system comprises a compact control surface, a local rack that houses the SCore Live processing engine, and a stage box that connects to the local rack via CAT5/7 cable. A fiber-optic interface also is available as an option.

“We appreciate the fact that the Vi6 facilitates quick setups at festivals and corporate shows; setting up front-of-house requires only two people,” Billinton continues. “The Vi6 has a very compact footprint, which is good for small FOH mix positions. Despite the size, I have found it is very easy to add and assign more inputs and outputs as needed; patching is easy for re-assigning inputs to handle different support acts, for example. We also have the new BSS/Lexicon DSP module–the Lexicon effects sound as great as you would expect, and the BSS EQ settings are easy to use.”

Soundcraft’s new DSP Package, which adds Lexicon effects and BSS Audio EQ, provides eight mono or stereo effects units that may be patched to aux bus outputs and then back into a channel input, or inserted into input or output channels. All effects are then controlled from the desk’s intuitive Vistonics™ II graphical displays. The Lexicon DSP offers 14 reverb types, including various plates, halls/spring types and delays plus chorus, flanger, tremolo and pitch shift. The BSS section provides a 30-band graphic EQ on every output, controlled via the first 30 channel faders. Simultaneously, a composite EQ curve is generated and displayed on the Vistonics II screen for that output path.
