Outdoor Interactive Displays Highlight Technology Collaboration

CALIFORNIA, September 2007 — In what is thought to be the largest touch-activated outdoor deployment of kiosks in the United States, Kern County, California recently announced the groundbreaking for a revolutionary outdoor touch-screen interactive visitor information kiosk at the Flying J Travel Plaza, in Lebec, California. The installation incorporates the collaborative technologies and efforts of four display industry frontrunners, Jupiterbay, Kortek, NextWindow and Display Devices, with Jupiterbay taking the lead on project management.

“When we started this project with Kern County, we were very excited at the idea of bringing their concept to life. Now that it has been completed, it is very satisfying to see the users so excited to have access to it,” said Jupiterbay‘s President, Tony Picciola, whose company served as the primary solution provider for the Kern County kiosk project. “I think you will see this become the standard for how local governments serve their residents,” he continued.

The large-format display, which is the first of the roughly nine kiosks which are anticipated to be included throughout Kern County, features Jupiterbay‘s FusionCast software, Kortek embedded PC LCD Monitors, NextWindow‘s interactive touch technology, and Display Devices enclosures.

Kern County Executive Director, Rick Davis, said that he had a virtual tourism kiosk in mind when he first attended KioskCom and saw the Kortek all-in-one 46” interactive display, which would ultimately become the model for the Kern County installation.

The software platform utilized in the Kern County Kiosks is Jupiterbay‘s proprietary FusionCast, a complete enterprise software platform that provides clients with the ability to manage a network of both Kiosks and Digital Signage displays located anywhere in the world. FusionCast also includes the industry’s most dynamic content scheduling tools as well as full reporting capabilities to monitor and measure customer interaction.

The Kern County outdoor visitor center will feature NextWindow’s 2800 Rugged Integrated Touch Panel, which was specifically developed for touch screen solutions in demanding environments, such as outdoor kiosks. NextWindow’s 2800 series touch panels are currently in use on the Brisbane Bridge in Brisbane, Australia.

“Combined with exciting interactive software, such as Jupiterbay‘s FusionCast in use in the Kern County kiosks, NextWindow‘s 2800 series screens can create a high-impact, interactive display ideal for many purposes including digital signage, wayfinding, travel and tourism and more,” said Anthony Uhrick, NextWindow‘s VP of Sales and Marketing, North America.

The Kern County kiosks were two years in development, and implement adapted technologies such as custom heating and cooling elements, humidity control as well as custom, tamper-resistant enclosures created by Display Devices to accommodate the area‘s harsh climate. In addition to general countywide dining, lodging and attraction visitor information, each kiosk will feature site-specific information as well, including such sites as the Mojave Space Center, and the Bakersfield Airport. Overall installation of the kiosks will include a combination of indoor and outdoor units throughout the county.
