Triveni Digital‘s Richard Kaye to Address Transport Stream Verification at SBE/Ennes Works

PRINCETON, N.J. — Sept. 19, 2007 — Triveni Digital, a subsidiary of LG Electronics (LGE), today announced that its senior systems engineer, Richard Kaye, will be speaking on the subject of transport stream verification at a series of Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE)/Ennes workshops, Oct. 4, 2007 in Marlborough, Mass. and Oct. 19, 2007 in Oldsmar, Fla. His presentation, “Monitoring and Analysis of MPEG Video Systems and A/78,” will address issues in transitioning to digital television, the importance of monitoring both for compliance and to ensure viewing quality, and how new standards are helping broadcasters implement better and more intelligent monitoring schemes.

“The diagnostic tools appropriate for monitoring analog broadcasts may not apply in the digital environment. Broadcast engineers need new tools and workflows to adjust to this new means and model of delivering signals to viewers,” said Kaye. “Analyzing the digital stream is a complicated undertaking, and I‘ll discuss the new challenges that face broadcasters and how a new recommended practice issued this year can make it easier to identify, prioritize, and solve problems within the digital transport stream.”

While most analog receivers respond similarly to a given analog signal, the digital television stream is handled differently by the various software types supporting today‘s set-top-boxes and TV screens. Kaye will discuss differences between the two signal types and provide examples of how new issues posed by DTV are requiring broadcast engineers to incorporate new toolsets into their monitoring workflow. He will also provide attendees with an overview of the new A/78 ATSC Recommended Practices for Transport Stream Verification and how it can help broadcasters isolate and evaluate problems quickly.

“The relative health of a digital television transport stream can be judged using an MPEG analyzer, but it is not always easy to determine the impact on the viewer of an error detected in the transport stream,” added Kaye. “Certain compliance issues are much more likely to create problems than others, and broadcast engineers need a guide to help them interpret the severity of the problems on their video distribution networks.”

Kaye is a contributor to the A/78 standard and currently sits on several ATSC standards committees including S-6 and, more recently, PC-3. During his seven-year tenure at Triveni Digital, Kaye has been the lead software quality assurance engineer for the company‘s StreamScope MPEG analyzer. Earlier, in his role as product support engineer at Triveni Digital, he spent a year in the field, troubleshooting and solving problems on real DTV systems. Prior to joining Triveni Digital, he spent six years as a hardware developer and quality assurance engineer at Nortel Networks in Dallas, Texas.

Kaye will be delivering his presentation during two SBE/Ennes events:

Nationally, SBE sponsors educational seminars to help keep broadcast engineers up to date on emerging technologies and issues facing the industry. Some of these programs are presented in conjunction with the Ennes Educational Foundation Trust, a 501 (c) 3 charitable organization established to further the educational goals of SBE. The Ennes Educational Foundation Trust, through its Education Foundation Committee, offers periodic workshops and seminars around the United States. Programs are typically one day in length and are very affordable. Presentations are non-commercial and focus on technology.
