World-Class Aquatic Center Goes For The Gold With JBL Professional Audio System

NORTHRIDGE, CALIFORNIA, September 21, 2007 — In a unique application of JBL Professional PD5000 Series loudspeakers, systems integration firm Morgan Sound and Onpoint Designs recently collaborated in the design and implementation of a new audio system for the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington. Originally built for the 1990 Goodwill Games, the Aquatic Center is a 5,000-seat venue, hosting an average of 50 swimming competitions annually.

The King County Aquatic Center is one of only three swimming facilities in the United States recognized as a world-class venue for international competition. The Center contains an Olympic-size pool and a diving tank with two levels of springboards and five levels of platforms. To match the state-of-the-art facility, the Aquatic Center turned to Onpoint Designs to design a high-impact audio system that would provide intelligible sound in the highly reverberant space.

“The goal of this project was to have the best sound of any aquatic center in the country,” said Jeff Sanderson, Founder/Principal Consultant of Onpoint Designs. “They wanted to have a system that was not only intelligible for speech, but able to integrate music playback into the events. So we had to come up with a system that could provide high power and clear audio for music as well as the spoken word.”

While accomplishing such a task would be challenging in any venue, the obstacles were multiple because of the facility‘s acoustics. “The Aquatic Center was very challenging acoustically because, in addition to the sound reflections off the water, the seating areas are recessed from the pool and are located directly behind a large concrete surface,” said Charlie Morgan, Owner of Morgan Sound.

Onpoint Designs specified a distributed audio system comprised of JBL PD5000 Series loudspeakers. “The PD5000 Series loudspeakers had the full frequency bandwidth that we were looking for, and it was really a clear choice,” Sanderson said. “They were able to deliver high enough intelligibility to overcome the direct to reverberant issues in the space, yet provide good full spectrum frequency response necessary for high impact.”

Morgan Sound installed the audio system, which features 12 JBL PD5322/95 loudspeakers arranged along a catwalk 60 feet above the floor of the Center, running parallel to the seating areas on both sides of the facility. Morgan Sound developed custom brackets to install the loudspeakers to the catwalk. “The brackets were crucial to the system because the speakers had to be able to rotate horizontally,” Sanderson added.

Additionally, the system is powered by Crown MA Series amplifiers and controlled via BSS Soundweb London processing with a remote panel. “The Soundweb product allowed us to customize a remote control that lets users select from different operating modes and control the volume of the microphones,” Morgan said. “There‘s a lot of flexibility with the system, so it can be manipulated for various events, whether it‘s training sessions, presentations at the pool, or competitions.”

To date, the system at the King County Aquatic Center has proven to be a tremendous success. “We have received nothing but accolades about the system capabilities and ease of use ,” Morgan said.
