Clay Paky’s Alpha Spot HPE 1200s Added To Lighting Inventory At Madison Square Garden

MSGMadison Square Garden, New York City‘s premiere indoor venue for sporting events, concerts and live entertainment, has added four Clay Paky Alpha Spot HPE 1200s to an existing complement of 24 Clay Paky Stage Zoom 1200 fixtures. Scott Humphrey‘s Delaware-based Light Action was the dealer of record for the sale.

Lighting designer Patrick Dierson of Artfag specified the Alpha Spot HPE 1200s. Dierson works directly with the National Hockey League‘s New York Rangers and the NBA‘s New York Knicks, who both call the Garden home, and is often called in by Garden operational personnel as a theatrical consultant. “They know what they want to happen but don‘t have the technical expertise to specify equipment,” Dierson explains. “I bridge that gap to make sure what they need is implemented seamlessly.”

The Alpha Spot HPE 1200 is the highlight of Clay Paky‘s Alpha range. Its extraordinary luminosity is guaranteed by the combination of a top-performance optical unit and a 1200w discharge lamp. Featuring a large, newly-designed effects section which includes 20 gobos and an animation disk, Color Mixing CMY and Linear Zoom 10-40 degrees, the Alpha Spot HPE 1200 is the quietest fixture of the range and the ideal choice for lighting designers who demand maximum results in professional lighting.

“We did a massive LED upgrade at the Garden and needed to supplement the entertainment lighting system to go along with it,” reports Dierson. “We had to have something with punch — something with a lot of output to compete with the new LED boards. Since we already had some Clay Paky units and they had an excellent reputation for reliability, it was natural to look at other Clay Paky fixtures.”

The Alpha Spot HPE 1200s not only provided the output Dierson was looking for but also offered a number of gobo options. Each unit comes with two rotating gobo wheels, each with six bi-directional, indexable and easily-interchangeable decorative glass and dichroic gobos with select ‘gobo shake‘ function and morphing effects.

“A lot of teams play in the Garden, and gobos get eaten up with their logos,” Dierson notes. “But you also want to have a good template on hand for theatrical purposes.”

Dierson has been delighted to discover that the Alpha Spot HPE 1200s meet all of the Garden‘s needs for its various events. “They do the business, look really good and are very bright,” he says. “And the optics are excellent, as I would expect with any Clay Paky product.”

Headquartered in Seriate (Bergamo), Italy, Clay Paky SPA has a history of designing and manufacturing innovative professional show lighting. The company was founded in 1976 by entrepreneur Pasquale Quadri who anticipated the enormous impact the evolution of technology would have on the show and entertainment worlds.
