Pro Media/Ultrasound Provide Audio Upgrade At HP Pavilion With JBL Professional PD Series

NORTHRIDGE, CALIFORNIA, February 1, 2008 — Underscoring the performance, reliability, and pattern control of JBL Professional‘s Precision Directivity (PD) Series loudspeakers, Hercules, CA-based Pro Media/Ultrasound recently utilized these speakers to upgrade the audio system at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. The project included the design and installation of new loudspeaker systems for the Pavilion‘s main bowl and back of house areas, and showcased Pro Media/Ultrasound‘s prowess as both a systems integration and audio rental firm.

The HP Pavilion, an indoor arena, originally opened its doors in 1993. It is home to the NHL‘s San Jose Sharks, the NLL‘s San Jose Stealth professional lacrosse team, and the AFL‘s San Jose SaberCats arena football team. The HP Pavilion also hosts a wide variety of other events throughout the year, which has included concerts by Paul McCartney, Shakira, and Metallica, as well as the NCAA basketball tournament, the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and numerous WWE events.

With close attention paid to keeping sightline issues to a minimum, WJHW Inc. designed a main bowl system with eight clusters arranged in a circular formation around the main scoreboard to maintain a discreet appearance while providing high-impact, uniform coverage. The eight clusters each contain three JBL PD743 high-power mid-high loudspeakers, with another three clusters of three PD7164 mid-low frequency loudspeakers each. Additionally, four clusters, each containing six JBL ASB6128 dual-18” subwoofers, provide extended low-frequency sound reinforcement.

Another eight JBL AM6212 full-range loudspeakers are hung under the scoreboard to provide additional coverage for the hockey players‘ warm-up skate and courtside seating during basketball events. The upper bowl is covered by a delay ring of 20 JBL PD5212 high-output two-way loudspeakers. The system is powered by Crown CTs amplifiers. Pro Media/Ultrasound also upgraded the ticket booth areas to feature JBL Control 30 loudspeakers.

“HP Pavilion wanted to preserve the original sightlines from the 1993 installation, which meant that the main clusters and delay ring had to be attached directly to the building roof truss,” said Demetrius Palavos of Pro Media/Ultrasound. “The delay ring is installed near the existing delay loudspeaker locations, which are further away from the audience than usual. So we installed the PD5212 loudspeakers to provide a high enough output and pattern control accommodating the long-throw requirements. The same is true of the PD loudspeakers in the main bowl. Their predictable performance and pattern control allowed us to get smooth horizontal coverage throughout the bowl without introducing too many late arriving reflections to the lower seating areas.”

These reliable qualities are primary factors in Pro Media/Ultrasound‘s continued use of PD Series loudspeakers for arena and stadium installations. “The PD boxes do a great job of providing precise pattern control throughout the enclosure‘s frequency response,” Palavos added. “That‘s important when dealing with a large room when you‘re accounting for potential reflections and other acoustical anomalies. The PD Series loudspeakers enable the designer and integrator to put the sound where you want it.”

Because of the short time frame allowed for the system upgrade, Pro Media/Ultrasound also employed its audio rental division to maintain a temporary sound system while the HP Pavilion continued to host events. “To meet the deadline, we had to de-install the entire system, take it offline and provide a temporary sound system when the Pavilion was in use,” Palavos said. “It‘s a much more challenging situation when you‘re dealing with a very quick turnaround, and we relied on our vendors to provide their products in a short time. JBL and Crown did a great job of getting the order and providing the finished product, so we had no problems with the audio and kept a very tight construction deadline.”
