No Time To Lounge: Lounge Lizards Stay Busy With IMpressive Home AV Projects

Latest project: Eastshire home features Middle Atlantic Products enclosures fully loaded with Krell Amps, Crestron control and first Velodyne 1812 subwoofer sold in the UK.

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS, 29 January 2008 – Martin Sullivan-Royall and Gary Wollen of Lounge Lizards have completed an impressive custom install for a new condo in Surrey that features some of today‘s most powerful components as well as some new, interesting techniques for racking and cable management.

All of the AV components are housed in the study, separate from the living room of the house. Yet all of the components needed to power and distribute audio as well as video to the entire home are located in two Middle Atlantic Products AXS enclosures. The enclosures are built into a customized bookcase that Lounge Lizards designed and had crafted specifically for this project.
According to Martin, the bookcase was designed to match and accentuate the feel of the room while providing functional space for the enclosures and other personal items. “The homeowner can use the piece to hold a number of books, CDs, photos and photo albums, etc. In addition, the piece also houses a printer server that provides wireless connectivity to the home office, as well as a 10-inch TPMC touch screen from Crestron to provide home automation control.”

The Middle Atlantic Products racks are encased in oak veneer–a material durable enough to handle both the weight and heat generated by the electrical components enclosed while keeping with the stylish look of the rest of the room. To further cool the enclosure, the Lounge Lizards team installed Middle Atlantic Products fan panels to vent heat into an adjoining room.

Within the custom furniture piece, the two racks reside behind two rack doors: one glass and one solid. “The rack with the glass door houses all of the Krell amps needed to power the home cinema surround-sound system. This way the homeowner can easily read the various setting for each amp and the blue glow from the output screens on each amplifier gives the rack a subtle but modern look. We like to call this the ‘show rack‘ – the rack that catches everyone‘s attention when they visit the apartment.”

“We took the blue color from the Krell amps one step further by using Middle Atlantic Products RSH Custom Rackmount shelves with custom faceplates to mount all of the components. The custom faceplates are cut specifically to fit the Krell components and done in a sleek silver anodized finish, so the enclosure looks uniform throughout with very clean lines. The finished product is visually arresting.”

The second rack is hidden behind a solid door, but houses much of the backend processing for the whole home automation system, including the Crestron Pro2 Control System, two Opus MCU500 Master Control Units for audio distribution to the Sonance ceiling speakers in eight audio zones throughout the house, and an Imerge S2000 MK II Soundsever that, according to Martin, “holds all of the previously recorded and saved television programming.” A Sky HD box receives the incoming High Definition television signal and enables playback on a massive, 63” Fujitsu plasma television at the client‘s leisure.

Martin and Gary had to pull nearly half a mile of QED Genesis Bi-Wire cable to wire the entire system. Together the team devised a functional solution for dealing with all this wire. As Martin recalls, “While that is a massive amount of cable, the Middle Atlantic Products rack and our custom furniture piece worked very nicely together in helping us hide all of those wires. We were able to cut a precise aperture in the back of the cupboard that we then fitted with a custom, stainless steel plate. This allowed us to fly lead speaker cable down the back of the cupboard, through the custom plate and into the rack and amps. When you pull the rack out, you only see the wires that feed into this stainless steel plate, and not a jumbled mess. As we like to call it, all you see is a ‘work of art.‘”

One of the most impressive components of the audio system is the new Velodyne 1812 subwoofer that was installed – the first ever sold in the UK. The Velodyne‘s power output is an astounding 6000 watts RMS through an 18” driver and another 12” driver.

“We actually broke the lift just trying to get the speaker up to the condo!” said Martin. “But once we did get it up, the rest of our job installing was done onsite. There was a lot of custom millwork done for this job, so we did all of the racking and installing at the condo. The entire project took us about two weeks and went very smoothly.”
