NEUTRIK WORKSHOP CONNECTS LA SIERRA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TO THE REAL WORLD

Ruben LeonLAKEWOOD, NJ – La Sierra University’s Music Technology Program first offered its unique Neutrik Cable Making and Interconnectivity Workshop in the Fall 2007 semester, and is already seeing success as one lucky student has earned an internship at Valley Sound in North Hollywood, California.

Based on the skills he obtained in the workshop, Ruben Leon was an ideal candidate for the internship. A junior at La Sierra University, Leon’s appointment marks the first formal internship for a student in the University’s Bachelor of Science program within the music technology track, launched in 2005.

“Internships ground the education we give our students in the audio industry, allowing them to gain valuable professional experience before finishing their degrees,? says Frankie Farrell, music technology professor at La Sierra University. “We would not have been able to create this special workshop at La Sierra if it weren’t for Neutrik’s generous donation and support. We are thrilled with the success of this workshop and its clear benefit to our students. Partnering with Neutrik, La Sierra University looks forward to offering this special program to our students in years to come.?

Ruben Leon and Robert SchoonraadNeutrik, designer and manufacturer of the XX series XLR cable connector, provided an assortment of its best-selling products to La Sierra University’s Music Technology Program for its Neutrik Cable Making and Interconnectivity Workshop, which is designed to provide students with practical and theoretical instruction in understanding the importance of quality components in maximizing recording and sound reinforcement signal chains.

Neutrik’s donation included 24 NP2X-B mono phone plugs to make instrument cables, 48 NP3X-B stereo 1/4″ phone plug cable connectors to interconnect six pieces of equipment in the student recording studio, along with 12 NC3MX-B XLR cable connectors [male 3 pole], 12 NC3FX-B XLR cable connectors [female 3 pin] to make microphone cables and an NYS-SPP-L balanced 1/4″ patchbay.

“It’s great to hear that our donation made a personal impact on a deserving student, giving him a real-world edge in the industry? states Jim Cowan, president of Neutrik. “Hearing personal stories like that of Ruben’s only reinforces the importance of donating to music programs such as the ones La Sierra University offers.?

In his position at Valley Sound, Leon helps repair guitar amplifiers and other equipment under the tutelage of one of the leading audio technicians in the LA area, Robert “Stretch? Schoonraad, who is also a guitarist and vocalist, who with his wife Zita, also a pianist and vocalist, owns the business.

“Ruben’s soldering capabilities, along with his knowledge of connectivity and circuit fundamentals, contributed greatly to our decision to bring him on board, as he had already had hands-on experience working in this area,? says Schoonraad. “Ruben was recommended to us as an intern, by his LSU Professor, Frankie Farrell, one of our valued clients, based on his showing unusual motivation and attention to detail during their course of study in audio electronics fundamentals. We have found him diligent, personable and always ready to add fresh knowledge and ability to his skill set.?

Leon will graduate with the program’s premiere class in 2009 and hopes to parlay his degree into a job handling sound technology for a touring band. The former high school bass player ultimately wants to establish a studio and a record company.

Neutrik manufactures a wide array of XLR connectors and receptacles, jacks and plugs, speaker connectors and accessories for the professional audio industry. Neutrik USA is located at 195 Lehigh Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701.
