A virtual press conference from Sound & Video Contractor

Meyer Sound Brings State-of-the-Art Audio to Portugal’s “Boutique Las Vegas?

Solverde Hotel Casino Chaves stands out as an extravagant entertainment complex in the scenic Portuguese province of Trás-os-Montes. In fact, with its stunning modernist architecture, glitzy, color-changing exterior lighting, and multipurpose theatre Peninsula Lounge featuring a pristine Meyer Sound system, Solverde would not look out of place even if it was built on the Las Vegas Strip.

While the natural beauty of Trás-os-Montes attracts tourists from neighbouring Spain eight kilometres away, Solverde sees the facility as a unique opportunity for the Chaves town of 40,000 people: “There’s nothing anywhere nearby to compare with this hall,? comments the casino’s in-house sound engineer, Nuno Gomes. “Our hope is that with the technology and infrastructure we have, we can start to attract big-name touring acts to this area for the first time.?

Peninsula Lounge usually seats 200 people when it is set up as a cabaret. On occasion, the room is rearranged to accommodate 600 for concerts. The Lounge’s Meyer Sound system was specified by venue consultant Ernesto Costa, provided by Caparica-based Lourisom and installed by the Porto office of Siemens Industrial Solutions & Services. The configuration includes five M’elodie™ line array loudspeakers hung either side of the proscenium as the main L-R system, supported by two floor-stacked pairs of 700-HP subwoofers. On stage, four UPM-1P loudspeakers provide front fills, two UPA-1P loudpeakers are used as side fills, and six UM-100P stage monitors support the performers.

Another pair of UPA-1Ps are wall-mounted as delays, handled by a Meyer Sound Galileo™ loudspeaker management system. A separate system can be created on occasion by dividing the theater into two with a movable, acoustic isolation wall. The UPA-1Ps can then be teamed with a pair of subwoofers positioned at the rear of the room.

As Gomes explains, the Meyer Sound system has raised the bar for performance technology in the region: “The Meyer speakers have great clarity and definition. The musicians love the monitors, and what amazes me most is the power and depth of the subs. When we opened in January, we were using a rental system as an interim measure. As soon as we changed to the Meyer Sound setup, the difference was huge.?

Gomes is especially pleased with the exceptional sound quality that the system delivers for the diverse presentations at Peninsula Lounge, including ensemble performances, Moulin Rouge and a recent concert of Brazilian singer Mart’nália. “Our regular cabaret show, which we host every night after dinner, is relatively quiet,? reports Gomes, “but we need more power and depth for when we host bigger shows, and this setup gives us that. The Meyer Sound system has behaved flawlessly and we are very happy with it.?
