A virtual press conference from Sound & Video Contractor

Electrosonic Provides Fast-And-Easy Viewing For Hollywood Casino At Penn National

PennAt Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course (HCPN) in Grantville, PA, gamblers and onlookers alike can call all the stakes with Electrosonic’s complete video routing (VR) and digital RF distribution designs, along with more than 600 custom-mounted displays, at the helm. The innovative broadcast/viewing configuration ushers comprehensive convenience into this world of entertainment, information and game-play fun.

The 83-channel digital RF system enables customers to watch live races at HCPN, or follow action at other tracks via an L-band satellite system and Roberts Communications’ simulcast decoders. The races are displayed on approximately 250 19-inch Samsung LCDs TVs in the Box Seating and Terrace Dining areas. The displays feature the latest QAM digital tuners to mesh with the system’s use of Z-Band RF coax over Cat5.

In addition, the RF system distributes Comcast and DirecTV feeds of sports channel programming and Pay Per View events to the Sports Bar. “The RF system is very progressive,? explains project manager Larry Schwartz at Electrosonic’s Minnetonka, Minnesota office. “

The big challenge was finding all the right components, since this system isn’t something you’d build every day.?

“In essence, each simulcast decoder represents a race track — like Aqueduct or Belmont Park — and each race track becomes a TV channel,? notes Schwartz.

The 365,000 square-foot integrated thoroughbred racing and gaming operation houses a VR system with a Magenta Mondo 64×160 matrix switcher and AMX control. It distributes pre-produced video to the casino floor’s Media Blitz area, and feeds customer information, such as special player rewards and big jackpot announcements, to the gaming floor and the eleven elevator lobby locations boasting large Pioneer plasma displays. Twenty-four 52-inch, and twelve 32-inch, monitors display races day and night in the lounge-style Simulcast Theater, where customers can also place bets.

Electrosonic also handled other AV elements at HCPN. “Every video fed into the facility goes through our distribution network, and is sent to any display panel,? concludes Electrosonic business development manager Jim Landy.

Entertainment services manager John Wise is in charge of AV in the facility and played a key role in determining how best to use video systems for this type of facility. Michael Tully, with Group SPI, served as a consultant on the project.
