Expo 2008 Covers Zaragoza in Spain with Meyer Sound

Beginning in June and running through September, Expo Zaragoza 2008 represents a timely issue for many of the more than 100 participating countries – water and sustainable development. The hosting Spanish city created a sprawling, 25-hectare (250,000-square meter), fully sustainable park grounds to accommodate the estimated six million visitors, who are inspired and entertained through water-themed expositions and pavilions, along with a diverse program of over 4,500 shows, nearly all of which are delivered by Meyer Sound systems. The performances range from classics like Carmen to local and international artists including Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Alanis Morissette, Björk, Paul Weller and Salif Keita, as well as a daily parade by Cirque du Soleil® called The Awakening of the Serpent™.

The complex logistics of creating audio systems for virtually all of the Expo’s main entertainment stages and parade routes is handled by Madrid-based production company Fluge, who has specified more than 400 Meyer Sound loudspeakers for the event.

The flagship 7,000-seat Amphitheatre 43 is outfitted with two main arrays of 13 MILO line array loudspeakers each, with low frequencies covered by 13 700-HP subwoofers per side. Sidefills of seven M’elodie line array loudspeakers and one 650-P subwoofer per side augment the main system, with a Galileo loudspeaker management system using two Galileo 616 units handling system drive and processing. Onstage, 16 UM-1P stage monitors and seven CQ-1 loudspeakers cover the performers.

Among the dozens of smaller venues is Aquatic Inspiration, one of the six themed plazas along the riverfront. Hosting six shows per day for three months, the plaza’s surround system utilizes two arrays of 12 MICA line array loudspeakers and five 700-HP subwoofers each, along with 16 UPA-1P loudspeakers covering center and rear channels.

Many of the smaller Balcony locations presented equally challenging logistics, with the international nature of the performances calling for systems that could handle everything from theatre and cabaret to flamenco and rock. As Fluge’s Andrés Aguerri observes, the choice of Meyer Sound was clear.

“We knew from early in the planning stages that we would need to create an infrastructure that could meet the technical standards of audio professionals from all over the world,” says Arribas. “For us, Meyer Sound was clearly the only loudspeaker that offered the versatility to adapt to such a wide variety of programs, and the dependability required for a project of this magnitude.”

Expo Zaragoza 2008 is the latest incarnation of a World’s Fair tradition dating back to the mid-19th century, with past Expo locations commemorated by icons like the Eiffel Tower, London’s Crystal Palace and Seattle’s Space Needle.

An extended report of the festival will be featured in Sound Stories soon.
