Flexing its muscles – Turbosound‘s new system impresses Germany’s dance music fans

With Turbosound’s Flex Array having proved an immediate success in both the UK and the USA, continental Europe has also not been slow to notice the qualities of the new system.
German audio rental company BLL-Veranstaltungstechnik, based in the city of Krefeld, has undertaken a number of high profile summer events with its Flex Array system complementing its large inventory of Turbosound Aspect and NuQ loudspeakers.
Mid-July saw the company providing sound reinforcement for many elements of the annual Loveparade festival which all-but consumes the city of Dortmund each year.
As well as a wide array of Aspect, NuQ and TSW cabinets featuring on a range of the colourful (and noisy) floats which form the event’s centrepiece, the company deployed a major Flex Array rig at Circle of Love, one of the many outdoor stages which also feature at Loveparade.
Featuring performances by Moby, Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin and other high profile DJs, the system comprised nine flown Flex Array cabinets and 12 ground-stacked TA-880L per side.
Early August then saw BLL-Veranstaltungstechnik‘s Flex Array and Aspect systems out in force again, this time at Nature-One – one of Germany’s premier dance music events – held at Pydna, the former US missile base near the town of Kastellaun.
With three arenas (one inside a nuclear-proof bunker) reverberating to the beat of no less than 54 Aspect and TSW cabinets between them, it was the outdoor USB-Hardtechno arena which saw 12 Flex Array and six TSW-718 bass cabinets per side ensuring that revellers were dancing hard throughout both nights of the party.
“We have been using Aspect ever since it was launched and we love it. And now we have Flex Array, we love that too!? smiles BLL-Veranstaltungstechnik owner Sascha Schmitz.
“It’s easy to handle and easy to fly with just one rigging point. And there is no heavy weight for my engineers to lift, despite it delivering all those decibels!?

However, these are only the first few of Flex Array’s attributes which Sascha and his team appreciate.
“It is a very easy system to handle, but one of the main reasons we bought it is because the coverage is ideal for us,? Sascha continues.
“We often work in long, narrow rooms and so the 75° coverage is perfect for many of the events we service. Most other line array systems have 90°, 100° or 120° coverage, which is simply too much for us – using those, a significant proportion of the sound would be going straight into the side walls, which can cause real problems with reflections.
“However, as we proved with Loveparade and Nature-One, the coverage of Flex Array also works very well outside. It performed excellently and, although the audio quality is slightly different to Aspect, Flex Array delivers particularly good low-mids for the small size of the cabinets.
“It is a great small box for all kinds of events and the sound is also remarkably powerful. People’s jaws simply drop when we start a dance party with Flex Array!?
