SENNHEISER MKH 800 TWIN OPENS UP NEW DIMENSIONS IN RECORDING

mkh_800_twin_nickel.JPGOLD LYME, CONNECTICUT: Sennheiser is showcasing the MKH 800 TWIN studio microphone at the 125th AES Convention in San Francisco opening up completely new dimensions for sound engineers in broadcasting, studio recording and film scoring. At its output, the dual capsule microphone provides both audio signals separately, allowing the mic’s pick-up pattern to be adjusted freely and remotely at the mixing desk, and then optimized later in the calm of the post-production studio.

“The infinitely variable pick-up pattern enables sound engineers and recordists to try out new settings with minimum effort and to optimize the sound at the mixing console,” explained Dawn Birr, product manager, professional products at Sennheiser Electronic Corporation. “Any intermediate stage between the individual pick-up patterns is possible.”

The signals of the two highly linear push-pull transducers are fed separately to the mixing desk. The pick-up pattern is then generated, as required, by adjusting the fader setting and signal phase.

“This means sound engineers can feel pretty secure, free and relaxed because the sound doesn’t have to be perfectly mixed in noisy control room conditions during recording – a time when things usually get pretty hectic,” said Birr. “Particularly when you’ve got overhead main mics, you really appreciate being able to control things remotely.”

The sound of the MKH 800 TWIN is similar to that of Sennheiser’s new MKH 8000 Series, offering fine resolution and a natural, warm sound with exceptional neutrality and transparency. The new member of the MKH family features extremely low self-noise, ensuring that even the finest sound structures and spatial depth are clearly audible. The frequency response extends to 50,000Hz, thus ensuring great resolution for complex acoustic details, especially for high-quality digital audio formats with high sampling rates. The selected pick-up pattern remains almost completely constant over the entire frequency range.

Its compact design allows the MKH 800 TWIN to be placed inconspicuously, which is a particularly important requirement for film scoring and live recordings. The microphone is available either in a nickel color or a dark grey non-reflective Nextel coating that is particularly good for film, live recording and broadcast applications.

The MKH 800 TWIN is available now, with an MSRP of $3,356.
