World Cafe Upstairs Shure Helps Philly Dream Venue Showcase Sounds for Everyone
PHILADELPHIA, PA, October 3, 2008 — In recent times, Philadelphia’s local music scene has produced a number of respected performers in genres ranging from jazz, R&B, and rock to hip-hop and Jamaican dancehall. Grindcore, industrial music, and hardcore punk are also part of Philly’s eclectic homegrown musical mix, which now finds a permanent place for onstage expression at World Café Live, a venue brought to life four years ago based on the vision of entrepreneur Hal Real.

Founder and President of Real Entertainment Group, Inc., Real is a one-time attorney and jazz musician, who, led by his passion for music, made an abrupt career change and decided to build the venue of his dreams. Investing upwards of $15 million in the project, the resulting state-of-the-art facility actually houses two distinct live performance rooms as well as the studios and offices of WXPN, the University of Pennsylvania’s influential public radio station. The home of World Café, an award-winning, nationally-syndicated radio show, WXPN licensed Real to use the program’s name, giving the venture an immediately recognizable identity and sealing the bond between what has become a unique pairing.

“We’re both about bringing new audiences to music and new music to audiences,” Real says, giving definition to the fruits of his labor. “You never know what you’ll find onstage at World Café Live, but it’s a safe bet that both music novices and music lovers alike will not be disappointed.”

World Cafe Downstairs BackSince opening in the historic Hajoca Building on the eastern edge of the University of Pennsylvania campus, local, regional, and national touring artists of all genres have crossed the stages of World Café Live. Both KT Tunstall and Corinne Bailey Rae played here before their GRAMMY® nominations, along with other artists like Rascal Flatts, Wyclef Jean, and Loudon Wainwright III, to name just a few.

The World Café Live’s stages are spread across two levels. Downstairs, a 300-seat music hall (650 standing) and restaurant is the larger space. An upscale restaurant and café holding 120 people seated (200 standing); the upstairs room showcases local and regional talent.

Clair Brothers, Acoustic Dimensions of Dallas and New York, and Philadelphia-based Metropolitan Acoustics jointly crafted the audio blueprint implemented throughout the facility. In the downstairs room, where a Midas Legend 3000 console is used to give direction to a house PA built around proprietary Clair Brothers loudspeakers, Shure products dominate a roster of microphones as diverse as the acts onstage.

World Cafe Down StageTen venerable SM57s and ten SM58®s lead the list, which takes a decidedly hardwired approach to the task of capturing sounds. Four Beta 87A mics used for vocals are also part of the inventory, along with Beta 56®A and Beta 91 mics used for kick drum. An SM81 condenser sees constant duty on various instruments, as does a Beta 52®A and a Beta 98. Premium Shure mics from the KSM family bring further complement to the sonic palette, with a handheld KSM9 proving to be a popular choice for vocals made by artists of all stripes. A side-address condenser KSM27 is also kept at hand, along with a pair of KSM137s.

Upstairs in the smaller room, loudspeaker systems from Clair Brothers were chosen again, buttressed at the low-end by Bag End subwoofers. An Ashley eight-channel mixer stands at the FOH mix position, while a smaller selection of Shure mics mirrors many of the same models found downstairs.

“There’s no question that we have as loyal a following as you’re going to find out there,” WXPN General Manager Roger LaMay told Playback magazine. As one of the country’s top public radio stations, WXPN’s presence at World Café Live has had a huge influence on the musical diversity that has become the venue’s trademark. “How do you find out what to put on your iPod? How do you decide what you want to listen to? We have a really strong track record in that regard…we are sort of trusted curator when it comes to that.”

A look at the schedule of events at World Café Live quickly reveals the venue’s varied, musical multiformity. Mercury Prize 2008 nominee Rachel Unthank & The Winterset made a late September appearance, followed by the Subdudes, who performed an all-acoustic set. John Legend will take his turn in the spotlights on October 7, while Los Amigos Invisibles brings their brand of rhythmic sass-and-salsa to the downstairs room on October 9.
