WIREWORKS AV2000 STEPS UP TO THE PODIUM FOR THE SPEECH DEPARTMENT AT HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY

Wireworks AV2000 at HofstraUNIONDALE, NY — Hofstra University’s Speech Department required a Smart Podium connectivity system that could easily be moved from classroom to classroom so students could hone their public speaking skills. As a result, the school recently turned to Wireworks Corporation, the leading innovator of audio/video cabling systems, for its AV2000 for Smart Podiums multimedia cabling solution. Wireworks AV2000 for Smart Podiums provided the robust, single connector solution the University was looking for, as the company’s AV2000 is the only multi-pin connector system that can accommodate audio, high definition video, high-speed data, and serial digital interface control signals in a single sophisticated hybrid connector.

Hofstra’s Smart PodiumThe Department of Speech Communication, Rhetoric, and Performance Studies at Hofstra University provides a liberal arts education that aims to nurture informed, skillful, and ethical communicators who will become active participants in local, national, and international communities. A major part of the curriculum is the analysis of the students’ speeches. As part of the Speech Department’s AV setup, a robotic tracking camera follows students around the classroom while they’re practicing their speeches. The speeches are recorded and then played back, enabling the students to critique their own public speaking performances.

The Smart Podium in Hofstra’s Speech Department includes a VGA computer monitor feed, several base band composite video, balanced audio, speaker level signals which go up to a pair of speakers and RS-232 control for the projector. The room can be set up into two formats, long or short, depending on the specific course. With Wireworks AV2000 for Smart Podiums the podium can be moved around the classroom by simply unplugging and re-plugging the single connector behind the podium, without having to run any additional wires. During speeches and other classroom exercises when there is no need for the electronic connections, professors can simply detach the entire podium assembly and wheel it out of the room.

“Wireworks really understood, just by speaking on the phone, exactly what the technical requirements of the project were,? says Joe Valerio, chief video engineer at Hofstra University. “The company’s AV2000 product exudes workmanship and engineering of the absolute highest quality; every wire was pre-tested, everything was numbered and there was absolutely no confusion, in the midst of all the signal requirements we needed.?

The AV2000 Umbilical permanently attaches inside of the smart podium for an easy and direct connection to the equipment within. The system eliminates any additional connectors as well as complex interface panels on the wall or in floor boxes. Connecting multimedia systems through one simple and reliable plug-in, AV2000 offers a practical, time and cost-efficient solution for both the installer and end-user. It also allows non AV professionals to easily set up the system, eliminating the possibility of crossed connections. The system offers a configured drop-in solution with an unprecedented turn-around time that is vital for the AV professional.

With 10 typical configurations, AV2000 for Smart Podiums makes ordering easy and convenient for AV professionals by offering a variety of typical Smart Podium signal requirements, including a combination of RGBHV, video, Y/C video, stereo audio, balanced audio, CAT5e, touch screen and I/O signals. Each AV2000 System is configured to match each project’s specific equipment requirements in terms of cable lengths and tail terminations.

“AV2000 for Smart Podiums is designed specifically for multimedia applications, such as in the classroom,? says Gerald Krulewicz, president of Wireworks. “The system dramatically reduces plugging time and allows non-technical users to easily connect to the multimedia technologies that are prevalent in today’s educational market.?

Utilizing two components – the Access Point and the Umbilical – the system can be easily integrated into any existing AV system. Umbilicals are typically mounted inside the Smart Podium and are terminated on one end with individual cables for connection directly to system components; the other end of the cable is a single, plug-in solution that connects to the system’s Access Point. The Access Point can easily be mounted in a floor box or on the wall.

Wireworks proven rectangular G-Series connector eliminates out-of-round and cross-threading problems that plague circular connectors. G-Series features a rugged cast metal housing that incorporates a strong cable retention design. Precision formed, gold-plated coaxial contacts prevent degeneration of signals. Cables are safely enclosed in a nylon mesh jacket to prevent damage from tangling.
