Eagle Brook Church Selects HaiVision’s hai1000 MAKO-HD Telepresence Codec for Exceptional Quality, Enabling a Unique Wireless Multicasting Model

MONTREAL — Oct. 27, 2008 — HaiVision Systems Inc., the world’s leading vendor of high definition (HD) H.264 telepresence codecs, today announced that Minnesota’s Eagle Brook Church has installed six hai1000 codec systems, equipped with the company’s low-latency MAKO-HD H.264 codec. The MAKO-HDs enable delivery of live HD content from the main campus in Lino Lakes to campuses in White Bear Lake and Spring Lake Park using a fraction of the bandwidth required by other encoding systems. The HaiVision systems, supplied and integrated by Eagle Brook Church and AVI Systems, deliver bidirectional video over an innovative 40-Mbps wireless (microwave) LAN that connects the three campuses.

“The growth of our church created a need for additional services at our remote campuses, and the HaiVision encoder provided an exciting solution to this dilemma,” said Bill Berger, director of technical arts at Eagle Brook Church. “We were amazed by the exceptional quality of video the encoder provides at such a low bit rate and at an attractive price point that fit within our budget. The HaiVision systems have operated flawlessly so far, performing well above our expectations and enabling us to implement a cost-effective, low-maintenance solution for real-time broadcasts.”

“When I described the HaiVision encoder’s bandwidth requirements to my contacts at Eagle Brook Church, they thought I’d left off a zero,” said Mike Wallin, design engineer at AVI Systems. “Whereas other products can require 80 Mbps for MPEG-2 video, the HaiVision encoders provide excellent video quality over four Mbps with room to spare.”

Prior to installing the HaiVision systems, Eagle Brook Church recorded services at its main campus and hand-delivered video to the other sites for later services. Now with the ability to send video in real time, the church has been able to offer the earlier service at all three campuses, thus opening up 1,500 new seats.

Using the HaiVision encoders, the Lino Lakes campus sends each satellite campus two unicast video signals, one fed to a center screen and the other to a pair of side screens. A return stream from each satellite campus is used primarily for monitoring purposes, but Eagle Brook Church did take advantage of this two-way capability by presenting an interactive kick-off celebrating the launch of the new video system. The church is currently working in SD, and the HaiVision encoders and network backbone will enable an easy shift to HD with the addition of HD-capable cameras and production systems.

The HaiVision encoders’ exceptionally low delay ensures that two camera shots from the main campus will arrive at the remote campus at the same time, thus maintaining the continuity of the live worship service. Because the HaiVision systems are highly scalable, Eagle Brook Church can continue to build out its multicasting capabilities, whether to set-top boxes around the facility or to other sites.

The hai1000 telepresence codec system delivers the highly efficient MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 video compression standard at unsurpassed levels, enabling communication of high-resolution HD (up to 1080p) or SD video and super wideband audio across IP networks at bandwidths anywhere from 256 kbps to 10 Mbps. The MAKO-HD “zero latency” codec from HaiVision is the highest-performance H.264 codec available for HD, supporting up to 1080p resolution and an imperceptible 70 millisecond end-to-end latency.

Eagle Brook Church took its HaiVision systems live on Sept. 7, 2008.
