Electro-Voice sound for top Arizona prep school

brophy_02.jpgNetsian Technologies (Tempe, Ariz.) recently installed a wide range of Electro-Voice audio equipment at Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, Ariz. The systems include EV’s state-of-the-art NetMax networking and processing platform, along with Xi, ZX, and EVID series speakers, all of which have greatly improved sound quality in the 80-year-old school’s Harper Great Hall and gymnasium.

“Brophy contacted us to replace their existing system with something more appropriate for one of the area’s top prep schools,? says Robert Reed of Netsian Technologies, “and we looked to Electro-Voice to provide the multi-purpose flexibility and all-around audio performance they needed.?

Because Brophy College Preparatory is privately funded, it hosts regular fundraising events—galas, auctions, luncheons, etc.—in its own space, Harper Great Hall, typically accompanied by live bands. The room is also able to accommodate presentations, lectures, and other speaking engagements, and also features partitions that allow the room to divide into sections, depending on the size and scale of the gathering. Due to the truly multi-purpose nature of the space, Netsian designed a system flexible enough to provide appropriate sound for any occasion.

“We brought in two very different speakers to handle different roles in Harper Great Hall,? says Reed, “installing EVID C8.2HC high-performance ceiling speakers across the room to manage overhead sound, and Xi-2153A loudspeakers to cater for live performances. Whether operating individually or cross-combined (via zone presets on the NetMax system), the EVID and Xi speakers provide a perfect marriage of capabilities, and the space sounds great because of it. They wanted the capacity to be loud without losing intelligibility and without distortion, and now they have a system that provides just that.?

“Our biggest challenge with this project was space,? Reed explains. “A key reason we were contacted was that the rental systems the school had used for fundraisers took up too much space, not to mention the liability issues that arise with cabling, etc. This system was designed to eliminate the need for rental systems, all in a tidy package that would be heard but hardly seen. So the key to the installation was to find a solution that was not only unobtrusive but also delivered Brophy the high-quality sound they needed.?

The space solution came courtesy of Dan Nelson, Reed’s consultant during the installation. “Dan noticed that the soffit running around the room might be big enough to fit Xi cabinets horizontally,? says Reed. “So we built custom carriages to hold each speaker in the soffit, and it came out perfectly. Even though they are larger, concert-quality systems, the Xi speakers are the ideal solution; their low-end beam steering feature makes them flexible enough to project right over the edge of that soffit, delivering the audio precisely where we need it, even from that height, and even from behind the stage. But most importantly, now we have a discrete system that can produce quality live sound from anywhere in the room.?

The Great Hall system comprises Xi loudspeakers, EVID ceiling speakers, and TG7 and PA Series amplifiers. EV TG7 amplifiers power the Xi boxes in the soffit, and PA Series amps power all other components. A Midas Venice console rounds out the all-EV and Midas system. All DSP and matrix duties are controlled via a fully loaded NetMax system controller. Netsian also installed ZX5 loudspeakers, TG7 and CP Series amplifiers, and QRx subs and TG7 amps in the school’s gymnasium.

“This system is truly state-of-the-art,? says Reed. “The equipment is so solid that it blew me away right out of the box, running with the factory settings. We couldn’t have asked for a better result from this installation.? Reed reports that the school staff, students, and parents are very happy with the installation.
