Electro-Voice NetMax shines at 2009 NFL Pro Bowl

probowl_2009.jpg Custom Audio of Kaneohe, Hawaii returned to Honolulu on Feb. 8 to provide sound reinforcement for the final NFL Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium. Custom Audio’s Jeff Kang used Electro-Voice NetMax signal processing and IRIS-Net control software with a system comprising equipment from Midas, Klark Teknik, and Dynacord to provide unparalleled sonic performance for the game, halftime show (featuring performers Enrique Iglesias and Ciara), and national anthem, sung by American Idol runner-up David Archuleta prior to kickoff.

“For other Pro Bowls I had been using multiple DSP to control delay times, EQ, and signal distribution around the field,? says Kang. “This year I ran everything through the NetMax, and sent all the functions – delay times, EQ, signal distribution – straight to the amp racks. So basically all the control was held at the Front of House position. Last year we ran things via a UCC1 (USB/CAN interface), but this year I decided to be a bit daring and try everything on the NetMax – it worked great! The touch panel stayed with me at FOH the whole time.?

NetMax and IRIS-Net provide Custom Audio the ultimate in flexibility and convenience for any event, but the benefits of NetMax design were never so apparent than between performances at the Pro Bowl.

“We have two operating modes,? says Kang, “a show mode and a game mode, and switching between the two involves changing delay times on the field speakers and turning speaker stacks on and off. Thanks to NetMax, I was able to do all that from my touch panel within a matter of seconds, as opposed to actually walking to the amp racks and turning volumes up and down. I just made a preset button for show mode and another for game mode and switched between the two. It was incredibly simple.?

In addition to the convenience of preset buttons, Kang also enjoys NetMax’s ability to consolidate and streamline DSP and coordinate his equipment.

“This year NetMax allowed me to eliminate multiple DSP units and replace them with one. Everything came out perfectly synchronized; I wasn’t worried about processing times. In a stadium as large as Aloha you might not be able to tell if the system has millisecond delays, but when television broadcast is involved an unsynchronized system is very noticeable. It means a lot to have a system as synchronized as this.?
