Shure Opens and Closes Coachella 2009

coachella-09-robt-smith-the-cure-4-19-09.jpgPAST CURFEW—This year’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival opened with Day 1 headliner Paul McCartney, an artist no less than a legend, and a man who defines many musical moments for his generation. At an opposite end of the bill, Robert Smith and The Cure closed the three-day festival’s run with equal flair, performing hits including “Pictures of You? and “Just Like Heaven,? songs that help define a different generation. Calling upon a Shure Beta 58 to manage his vocals, frontman Smith sang above a smoldering wash of guitars, infecting the crowd with his signature voice.

“All of the artists and bands I saw at Coachella this year were using either an SM58 or Beta 58 for vocals,? said Shure West Coast Artist Relations Manager Bill Oakley. “It’s my understanding that Robert Smith has been using a Beta 58 for several years now, and The Cure’s closing set at this year’s Coachella was no different.?

With new songs and obscure B-sides punctuating a seamless set list as well, the pioneering Goth band pushed 33 minutes past curfew with a series of encores.
