A virtual press conference from Sound & Video Contractor

grandMA Rocks Carnegie Hall With YouTube Symphony Orchestra

Legendary Carnegie Hall was the setting for a sold-out concert last month when 96 musicians from over 30 countries came together for the first-ever YouTube Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra was made up entirely of musicians who auditioned online via YouTube and were chosen from 3,000 submissions. Under the direction of acclaimed conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, the group performed after only two-and-a-half days of intense rehearsal and MA Lighting’s grandMA flexed its muscles for this one-of-a-kind performance. A.C.T. Lighting is the exclusive distributor of the grandMA in North America.

Lighting designer Alan Adelman and lighting programmer Paul Sonnleitner worked with a combination of moving lights and LEDs and conventional house lights for this very unconventional show, all operated via the grandMA. Scarff Weisberg supplied the lighting and grandMA. Video was supplied by Obscura Digital.

“We chose the grandMA for this because we needed a fast way to control the moving lights and LEDs,” explains Sonnleitner. “Alan has lit Carnegie Hall on many occasions, and it was a great experience using the grandMA with talent as diverse as the YouTube Orchestra. This was so well received and seen by so many people on the Internet-more than could ever actually attend Carnegie Hall.”

Since it’s launch in December, YouTube’s Symphony Orchestra channel has received more than 15 million views.
