Rambla Draws On Wowza Pro for Amazon EC2 for Instant Capacity in Belgium’s Largest Live Streaming Event

EVERGREEN, CO, May 21, 2009—In what was Belgium’s largest live streaming event on May 16-17, more than 30,000 concurrent online viewers, some as far away as New Zealand, Aruba and Argentina, witnessed the birth of Kai Mook, the first-ever elephant born at the Antwerp Zoo. The 42-hour non-stop live streaming was orchestrated by the cutting-edge Belgian content delivery network Rambla using Wowza Media Server® Pro for Amazon® EC2, which gave them the elastic capacity to manage the flood of global viewers.

“Wowza Pro for Amazon EC2 was truly a saving grace for us,? said Jo Martens, Managing Director, Rambla. “We needed to increase our CDN’s capacity quickly to insure the event’s success. Wowza’s media server software combined with Amazon EC2 Web Services was the perfect solution. It scaled beautifully and reliably to handle peak viewer loads and proved to be an extremely economical short-term capacity boost for us. It was cloud computing at its best.?
Wowza Media Server Pro for Amazon EC2 is a self-managed cloud-based solution that can be used by streaming providers as a core platform for building media delivery services or, as was the case with Rambla, to cost-effectively gain instant extra capacity.
Based on a Web 2.0 portal conceptualized by the ad agency Boondoggle, the weekend-long spectacle surpassed a number of milestones:

• About 50,000 people registered for an SMS alert that notified them right before the elephant’s birth

• Viewership peaked at over 30,000 concurrent users at the time of elephant’s birth

• In all, the stream reached more than 350,000 unique visitors

• The average viewing time throughout the event was 1 hour and 35 minutes
