A virtual press conference from Sound & Video Contractor

kim_jones.JPGEAST STROUDSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA – JULY 2009: Headquartered in East Stroudsburg, Law Sound & Lighting delivers full production audio services and high-end equipment rentals to northeast Pennsylvania, the East Coast, and the world. Its broadcast clients include ESPN, ABC, FOX, and NBC, among many others, and its PA systems have supported acts as varied as BB King, James Brown, and Blue Oyster Cult. Law recently added several remarkably affordable Sennheiser SKM 2000 wireless microphones to its inventory to ensure performance, quick setup, and rock-solid reliability in even the most challenging RF situations.

Law rents packages that include wireless handheld mics to the YES Network for roving talent at New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets games. “We were having an annoying problem,” explained the company’s owner, MJ Law. “YES Network reporter Kim Jones watches the end of the game deep underneath thirty feet of concrete on the third base side. When she communicated with the production truck to work out the logistics of who to interview and when, we took a lot of hits. It was all pre-fade, but it was still very distracting.”

When Law heard that Sennheiser’s new SKM 2000 handheld transmitter boasts 100 mW of signal strength, he was intrigued. “There are not many manufacturer that make broadcast-grade handheld transmitters with 100 mW,” he said. “And they don’t have Sennheiser’s long history of RF technology nor the low price point of the 2000 Series. The SKM 2000 really changes the playing field!”

When Law heard that all of the units in the 2000 Series are also backwards compatible with his existing Sennheiser equipment, he was sold. “I have forty channels of Sennheiser G2 receivers, and although we plan to upgrade to take advantage of the new frequency agility of the 2000 Series, it’s a lot easier to rotate the inventory in stages,” he said. “Since getting the SKM 2000 transmitters, we’ve done some range tests. We’ve gone as far as the Mohegan Sun Sports Bar, which is behind the centerfield back wall at Yankee Stadium. That’s much farther than we would ever need to go, and it was still rock solid.”

Law also rents packages to and provides technical support for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) organization, which hosts mixed martial arts fights around the world. Integral to a UFC bout is “The Octagon” – an eight-sided platform surrounded by chain-link fence. “We rent eight packages to UFC consisting of three handheld mics, and five lavs,” said Law. “The Octagon was plaguing us with phase issues, so we added some helical antennas to the package and upgraded to the Sennheiser SKM 2000 handheld transmitters. “Now it doesn’t move, it’s absolutely solid,” he reported. “Another nice thing about the SKM 2000 is the little fin on the antenna. We put a mic flag on each unit, which drops the user’s hand down a few inches. People with big hands were often crushing our other antennas! The fin prevents that.”

Since adding the Sennheiser SKM 2000s to the inventory, Law has heard a few other compliments. He said, “The crew likes the feel of the mic – it’s robust. They can also use infrared to zap the frequency between the receiver and the transmitter. That saves a lot of time and prevents user error, especially in stressful or hurried situations, which are more often than not.”
