FEATURE ESSAY:

1. Synopsis describing the project goals, special features, or nuances.

The challenge was to comfortably fit an audience of ten into a room with limited sight lines and provide cinema-scope movie entertainment and effortless operation. The space already existed when the integrator was brought into the project. Without being able to expand the room, careful attention was paid to line-of-sight and video projection light cone. All current movie and HDTV entertainment formats were required with the ability to adapt upcoming Internet movie delivery platforms.

The theater’s control, movie, and TV viewing options are integrated into the overall home system.

2. Did you encounter any challenges or limitations in the design of the system or placement of equipment? Please describe the control system.

The first challenge was determining sight lines and projection throw in a room with less than 9′ ceiling height. Once the seating was determined and main speaker baffle wall located, discussion focused on the projector location. Fortunately there was a bay window at what was now the rear wall. The bay window was walled into and became the projection booth complete with 200 CFM exhaust venting. Adjacent to the theater was the home office, the perfect place for the dual 7′ tall racks. Easy to access, convenient to show off, all while not intruding on the theater interior design or enjoyment. Thus we accomplished a prime goal, entertainment with minimal dealing with technology. The only technology seen is the 10″ touchpanel. Using this panel the client controls all media and lighting. The movie collection graphics, DVD movie and system menus are viewed on the panel and touching the movie name or cover art instantly starts the selection. The intuitive nature of the in-house created GUI and programming was proven by the client’s enjoyment of the theater prior to the scheduled instruction appointment. Single button selection offers over 80 favorite channels and multiple room lighting scenes. Control includes three DVRs labeled “his?, “hers? and “theater.? The “his? and “her? units are also accessed throughout the home. Security cameras are also viewed on the panel to monitor the grounds.

lht20c.jpg3. Please discuss the acoustics including speaker placement and calibration as well as the SPL reading. Discuss the ventilation of the room.

Main left, center, and right speakers are mounted in a dual layer baffle wall behind the micro-perforated THX approved screen. One inch black acoustical liner is behind the screen to dampen reflections between the screen surface and speakers. Dual 18″ subwoofers are below the screen behind acoustically transparent fabric. The subs and mains are shock mounted to minimize transmission coloring. Four side THX and two rear surrounds are flush mounted per THX placement guidelines. Front wall and first 4′ of side walls lined with 1″ thick acoustical paneling to control first reflection to provide clearest soundtrack performance. The rear wall was also acoustically treated to reduce reflections back to the listener. Isolation was done with QuietRock QR530 and independent wall framing. Room AC supply in front with return in rear creates slight cool breeze towards audience’s faces. Ducts are all lined with multiple bends to dampen mechanical sound transmission. A final NC of under 20dB was achieved. Room tuning was achieved with eight channel 96 band digital equalizer and multi-microphone weighted computerized measurements. Final room response is +/- 1.5dB of SBIC small room weighted curve from 25 to 18 kHz. Equalization curve was set with THX re-equalization turned off. Final tuning was completed after extensive listening tests.

lht20a.jpg4. Did you calibrate the theater? If yes, please discuss the video calibration and any challenges you encountered during calibration.

Video was calibrated by ISF certified in-house staff with Sencore instrumentation. +/- 100 degrees of D6500 standard from 10 to 100 IRE scale. Screen brightness exceeds SMPTE theater standard. Screen geometry within 1/2″ for all aspect rations. Separate color memories set for 480i, 720p and 1080p for 1.33 / 1.78 / 2.35 aspect ratios. HDMI video from all dedicated theater sources.
