Services to be televised nationally on Trinity Broadcasting Network

CYPRESS, CA– San Antonio, Tex.-based Summit Christian Center (SCC) has recently installed an array of FOR-A products in its new worship facility, including two FOR-A HANABI switchers, an HVS-1500HS 1.5 M/E switcher and an HVS-600HS 1 M/E switcher, to serve at the heart of the facility’s video production system.

Five worship services are produced every weekend with contemporary live music. The church also schedules a variety of creative performances and pieces to coincide with holidays and special events. SCC began holding worship services in its new 2,500-seat facility in June 2008, and future plans include an expansion to seat 5,000 congregants.

At the church’s previous location, video production was limited with a four-channel composite switcher. According to Nathan Roberts, SCC technical director, the switcher upgrades were necessary because the church will be recording worship services for broadcast on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. The program, Life at the Summit, is scheduled to premiere next month.

“This will be our first exposure on national TV – and in planning for that we became keenly aware of the shortcomings that our original setup had,? Roberts explained. “We looked at what we needed to do to make the jump to broadcast quality and chose the HVS-1500HS right from the beginning.?

Services are recorded using four Sony HD cameras (3 -Sony HDC-X310 box cameras and one SONY PDWF355). Output from the HVS-1500HS, the main switcher in the control room, and one isolated camera are recorded to XDCAM. The HVS-600HS is used to feed images from multiple playback decks to the image magnification (IMAG) screens in the sanctuary. A PowerPoint graphics program provides lower-third identifications of various passages being read, and scrolls hymn verses on the screens so congregants can sing along.

“The addition of these switchers has made all the difference in the way our service looks. The images look great and are often the first thing visitors notice upon entering the auditorium,? said Roberts. “The image quality is what they comment on – and we know it has been improved by how we’re getting it up on the screen.?

SCC also purchased FOR-A UFH-108A and UFH-112 Universal Frames. D/A modules in the UFH-108A feed reference monitors at the front of the house, lighting positions, audio and backstage locations, which eliminate the need for HD-SDI monitors at those locations. The UHF-112 is loaded with down converters that allow for the transmission of an SD signal throughout the facility.

The entire video production team at SCC is made up of volunteers, many of whom have little or no experience in a video production environment. Roberts said the learning curve, though fairly steep, was met with enthusiasm. Over time, the volunteers have been able to learn by doing.

“Our opening week was met with many wide eyes, but this experience has been exciting and rewarding for the volunteers because they’re working hard and will be able to see the fruits of their labor on a national stage,? he said. “We knew once we acquired the proper gear to achieve broadcast quality we’d have the heart to make it happen. As we gain more expertise among our volunteer staff, the FOR-A switchers will definitely grow with us.?

The HVS-1500HS HD/SD switcher offers 16-button, 24-button, and rack mountable 12-button control panels. It comes equipped with a high-performance DVE for true 3D effects, six keyers, and up to six still stores. The HVS-600HS is a compact, economical HD/SD video switcher with 10 different configurations, customizable I/O formats, and a variety of hardware and software options.
