FEATURE ESSAY
1. Please provide a short four to six sentence synopsis describing the project goals, special features, or nuances.
This project was a major remodel that would embrace green building techniques, cutting edge technology to control all home systems with ease-of-use, and an eye on future expandability. This is why the Netstreams IP based A/V system was chosen. We were excited to be involved with this challenging project. This system integrates home theater, whole-house audio, security cameras, HVAC control, lighting control, motorized shades and skylight, and even remote control of the master bedroom fireplace. Two iPod docks can be accessed to send music to any of the rooms in the home. The distribution of all systems is implemented via a Netstreams Digilinx system, with added control from multiple RTI remote controls.
2. Did you encounter any challenges or limitations that required special consideration in the design of the system or placement of equipment? Please describe the control system.
The remodel was already under way and partially done when we were contracted to help with the design and installation of the system. The client is a fan of technology and knew what functions he wanted, and needed help achieving that goal. The system was to be technically advanced, yet user friendly for family members. By using touchscreens and keypads throughout the home, and a RTI WiFi remote along with the Netstreams IP control and distribution system this was accomplished.

3. Discuss the overall plan you created to accomplish the clients’ requirements.
The installation of products was to be discreet and all of the source and control products were hidden in two equipment closets. All of the Canton speakers are either in-ceiling or in the wall flush mount. The client wanted an elegant theater experience in the master bedroom. There is a 50� Fujitsu plasma above the fireplace, and for movie watching there is a 110� screen that drops in front. A single button push on the RTI touch screen remote will lower the screen while shutting off the plasma, as well as the fireplace, close the skylights and their shades, as well as all of the shades on the windows, dims the lights and then starts the DVD from the JVC 3-chip projector.

For entertaining there are different party modes programmed into the Netstreams system that sets the zones for music as well as lighting and adjusting the motorized window treatments. When guests arrive the doorbell mutes the music and rings a custom tone through the system, and the homeowner can see who is at the door through the Panasonic security cameras on the Netstreams touchscreens as well as talk to them on an intercom and unlock the door to let them in.

All of this technology is wrapped up in a simple to use package that makes this “Green home� in the Silicon Valley a joy to live in!
4. Describe the five most used functions of the system and how they benefit the client.
a. Netstreams distributed audio throughout the home creates a rich ambiance whether listening to their iPods or other sources.
b. Integrating security cameras allows the client to see who is at the door on the Touchlinx screen as well as communicate with them and unlock the door to let them n.
c. Netstreams Panorama distributes video to five locations throughout the home.
d. Lutron Radio RA lighting control and motorized shades are controlled from dedicated Lutron keypads as well as the Netstreams Touchlinx system.
e. The Netstreams system controls the HVAC in conjunction with the Aprilaire thermostat.
