FEATURE ESSAY

1. Please provide a short four to six sentence synopsis describing the project goals, special features, or nuances.

Our clients are very concerned with security, and our task was to make this system accessible throughout the home. Closed circuit camera views and security system status pages had to be available on all touchscreens. Lighting and shade controls were also important to the client. Whole-house audio and video systems provide wonderful entertainment value to this secure and elegant home.

2. Did you encounter any challenges or limitations that required special consideration in the design of the system or placement of equipment? Please describe the control system.

This residence is a beautiful coastal home with a spectacular view. Our main challenge on this project was to provide audio and video equipment that was easy and comfortable to use, but also completely discreet. One half of the sprawling master suite takes advantage of the property’s commanding view through elegant floor to ceiling windows. We accented these remarkable windows with Sivoia QED sun shades which blocked out the morning glare, yet still allowed the owners to enjoy the waterfront view. While in bed the clients also have the option to watch television on a 42” Pioneer plasma television. In order to preserve the view, we installed the plasma on an electronic lift that recesses into the ceiling when not in use. Two Sonance in-ceiling speakers deliver sound into the spacious bedroom for the television audio or house music through the Crestron home control system. Sonance speakers were also placed in the bath for music; while a 37” Sharp HDTV was installed in the office. Each of these three spaces was equipped with unobtrusive, in-wall Crestron touchscreens for easy control of all house systems.

3. Discuss the overall plan you created to accomplish the clients’ requirements.

Our plan was a very precise one. It required the heavy involvement of our client from the beginning to the end of the integration process to ensure their complete satisfaction. We reviewed all the layout concepts with the client, architect, and builder. We also coordinated closely with the security contractor to ensure that every facet of the project proceeded smoothly.

4. Describe the five most used functions of the system and how they benefit the client.

a. Security Features – Our client was extremely security conscious and wanted a comprehensive security system. The ability to monitor the status of doors, windows, and motion sensors was at the top of his list.

b. Lighting Control – Lighting control was also an essential component of the project, although controlling every load discreetly was not prioritized over having the capability to quickly see which rooms had lights on.

c. Shade Control – The Lutron Sivoia QED motorized solar shades are ideal because they allow our client to enjoy the soothing outline of the water even when closed. The shades are controlled by a Crestron home automation system that is used throughout the house.

d. Whole-House Audio – This multi-room audio system with Audio Request pipes music throughout the house for users to access with the touch of a button.

e. Easy Control Option – We used in-wall Crestron touchscreens to provide our client with a solution that is both inconspicuous and user-friendly. A Universal Remote Control MX-3000 allows for easy control of the TV.
