WSDG Provides World-Class Environment for Dedicated A Cappella Studio

SKOKIE, IL: A cappella, one of the most idiosyncratic of all performing techniques, presents the ultimate challenge in precision vocalizing. Recording performances which rely exclusively on the human voice for instrumentation as well as lyrics and melody is a unique art. VOCOMOTION Studio owner Freddie Feldman is a master of the genre.

Opening his original studio in Evanston, just outside of Chicago in 1998, Feldman quickly developed a core client base that ranged throughout the U.S., and into Europe and South America. “I got into a cappella in High School, and continued to perform and record it exclusively at Northwestern U, he says. “There are less than half a dozen studios in the world which specialize in this style. That provides us with a more

Studer Vista 5 SR’s Mix French Opera Singer At Chateau De Versailles

When French opera singer Roberto Alagna performed a one-off spectacular at the Chateau de Versailles recently, supported by the 90-piece Orchestre de Paris (conducted by Michel Plasson), Studer Vista 5 SR digital consoles handled both the house and monitor mixes.

The concert, performed in front of 7,000 people, was held in the middle of La Fontaine de Neptune basin — on a concert stage especially set up for two months in the summer, specifically to stage spectacular events of this nature.

The sound reinforcement system was provided by French distributors, DV2 while the two Vista consoles were loaned by Audiopole, the French Studer distributor.

FOH sound engineer; Jean-Marc Aringoli, was already familiar with the Studer topography having used the Vista 8 for several years to mix ambitious live musical spectaculars for television such as Les Victoires de la Musique at the Paris Zenith.

Fabulous Blue Diamonds Find A Recording Gem In Soundcraft LX7ii

When Mel Patrick decided to re-form his surf-rock outfit, the Fabulous Blue Diamonds, he turned to the Soundcraft LX7ii to bring professional-quality recordings to his home studio setup. Along with lead bassist and lifelong friend Fred Lichota, Patrick set up the LX7ii as the centerpiece to a full recording system in his home studio.

Patrick and Lichota currently stand as the remaining two members of The Fabulous Blue Diamonds, a self-described “1960s instrumental surf band that got its start playing in night clubs, local TV stations and battles of the bands. Although they had a history as live performers, Patrick and Lichota chose to build on their legacy from the confines of the recording studio. Patrick designed and built the studio’s mixing desk, leaving plenty of room for expansion. “Almost everything from the LX7ii finds its way out to one of four patchbays in the mixing desk, Patrick says. more
