FEATURE ESSAY

1. Please provide a short four to six sentence synopsis describing the project goals, special features, or nuances.

The client wanted a home where all the control to operate the house worked as one in a simple and intuitive manner. This is also a second home, so monitoring the systems of this mountain home from the main sea level residence was essential. The home is a re-creation of a French country chateau from the architectural design to the beautiful interiors. Incorporating a seamless integrated state-of-the-art home within the design parameters was also a consideration when designing the system.

2. Did you encounter any challenges or limitations that required special consideration in the design of the system or placement of equipment? Please describe the control system.

One of the biggest challenges is the outdoor grotto. The grotto was built to house an indoor spa. There are no windows, it is made out of rock and concrete, and it is very humid. The system has to control the spa temperature, distributed audio and video, local and outdoor lighting, and a waterfall. All wires had to be run through conduit because of the concrete walls. Touchpanels had to be waterproof and embedded into the concrete. A special box with a Plexiglas window and its own AC system was built for the TV, which hangs from the ceiling.

In the home there are two lifts for pop up TV’s which could in no way restrict the mountain views. All had to be custom engineered and put into custom cabinets. Existing mechanics and furniture were too bulky.

3. Discuss the overall plan you created to accomplish the clients’ requirements.

The plan was to design a complete intuitive system for the house, making it as simple to use as possible. The house includes distributed video, distributed audio, lighting, water features, fireplaces, surveillance, security, phone system, HVAC, and home networking.

4. Describe the five most used functions of the system and how they benefit the client.

a. Distributed Audio – Nothing is localized. Each member of the family can access her/his own Kaleidescape movie choices and DVR.

b. Distributed Video – Again it is user based and there are several request players throughout the home as well as individual iPod docks.

c. Lighting – Controlled throughout the house on various touchpanels and keypads. Scenes are set for different rooms, hallways have pathway lights, outdoor lights monitor the property, and there is a touchpanel by the side of the bed that can shut it all down when retiring.

d. Integrated Security – The security system can be viewed from touchpanels throughout the home. Once the alarm is set, if anything is compromised you can view the touchscreen to see the problem.

e. Global Control out of State – Monitoring the home systems from out of state is an invaluable function. Making sure the departing guests turned down the heat, turned off the lights, set the alarm etc., can all be double checked and controlled.
