High Marks for High School Application

The Customer
New Tech High @ Coppell, located in Coppell, Texas, is a unique school concept that is centered around a Project Based Learning environment for students. This concept is a part of the New Tech Foundation based out of California. This school is currently made up of freshman and sophomore students but will grow and have approximately 500 students. Additionally, this school and every student has their own laptop for 1:1 computing.

The Challenge
The school district was looking for high visibility technology project to highlight the school’s special capabilities. A nine screen video wall presentation was decided on as the perfect solution. It was to be located right at the front entrance of the school, adjacent to a huge open student lounge that is used for studying, etc… were solicited for the project from the local community which really came through.

The Solution
Computerland of Texas was chosen as the integrator. They both designed and installed the project. For the screens Computerland chose Samsung 40? LCD’s and configured them in a 3 X 3 video wall. For the media player they chose a YCD server and software. For the transmission and distribution they selected Minicom Digital Signage equipment. This included one DS Vision 3000 distribution system including transmitter & receiver and eight Mini-KVM USB Extenders. The YCD player in a data center some 80 feet from video wall. Using mini extenders they extended video to eight of the screens. They used DS Vision 3000 to control the screens – turning them on and off and to extend video to the ninth screen.

The Outcome
The wall has become a showcase for student talents, broadcasting their content-based videos to the public. The entire project is 100% student driven. School administration is happy because it really shows off the school and the difference it is making with the students. The project is so successful, that the curriculum in the next school year will be driven by the video wall and digital signage applications. Executive Director of Technology at Coppel ISD is Chad Branum. He says the application is so successful it practically runs itself. “Once it was up and running – it just goes. We are very happy with the solution.?
