Toronto Travellers Get the Picture – Digital Signage Case Study

Digital Signage Application at Toronto Subway

The Customer
The ONESTOP Media Group (OMG) is the digital signage network operator for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), which manages all the public transport in Toronto. TTC’s three main arms are buses, trams and subways.

The Challenge
To install a multimedia distribution system that will deliver real-time information via 1,500 screens to be located throughout the subway system. The up to the minute information is to include subway updates, safety alerts, news, sports, weather, entertainment and advertising. This content will be displayed to over one million passengers a week.

The Minicom Solution
Minicom installed its CAT5-based Audio Visual Display System (AVDS) to enable content distribution from players to the hundreds of screens. The AVDS is a powerful solution delivering crystal clear, real-time content to distances of up to 110m/ 360ft from the player over. CAT5 cable. The advantage of CAT5 lies in its ability to transmit high bandwidth content within a low density, easy to install cable. The system is entirely hardware-based and network independent while not requiring the installation of any software.

The Benefits
Surveys have confirmed increased commuter satisfaction as a result of the up-to-the-minute information, which makes the journey more entertaining and more informed. TTC now has the opportunity to reach a captive audience with a mass reach via direct target marketing capabilities. The network brings in a great deal of advertising revenue which has helped the system achieve self-sufficiency. ONESTOP has received both national and international media recognition for its advertising network winning the Enabling Technologies award from the Canadian Marketing Association – the first time for a digital signage network.
