Haivision Launches Torpedo(TM) DVB-to-IP Gateways at IBC

MONTREAL and CHICAGO — Aug. 31, 2010 — Haivision Network Video today announced the immediate availability of the Torpedo(TM) family of DVB-to-IP gateways. Today’s digital broadcasts can be harnessed and delivered over IP video networks without the need to re-encode the content. The Torpedo takes a digital RF DVB signal from a satellite or terrestrial antenna, extracts and filters the MPEG-2 transport stream packets, and retransmits them to multiple multicast or unicast UDP targets via an Ethernet interface. Using a single Torpedo, a number of digital satellite TV and radio services can be delivered to viewers over standard IP video networks.
Haivision’s Torpedo supports both standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) satellite (DVB-S and DVB-S2) and terrestrial (DVB-T) signals. The Torpedo will also support DVB-T2, an emerging standard for terrestrial HD, early next year. The Torpedo may be used stand-alone, or integrated as part of the Furnace(TM) end-to-end IP video system. The Furnace provides for central control of all Torpedo gateways as well as Haivision’s Makito(TM) and Barracuda(TM) encoders. In addition, the Furnace can groom the streams from the Torpedo gateways with encryption for media security and forward error correction for stream resiliency, essential features for enterprise IP video applications.

As video streams generated by the broadcasters are relatively high-bandwidth, Haivision is pairing the introduction of the Torpedo gateways with their powerful new VF Transit(TM) technology. With VF Transit, the Furnace can transrate the original streams into many streams of varying bandwidths for consumption throughout the enterprise. This makes it possible to serve clients on any platform, including desktops, set-top boxes, and mobile devices at bitrates that best suit the enterprise network and viewer rather than those determined solely by the upstream service provider.

“The Torpedo combined with VF Transit shows our commitment to solving the end-to-end IP video delivery challenges within the enterprise,” said Mirko Wicha, president and CEO of Haivision. “Today people are looking for solutions that can reach all users equally, anywhere and on any device.”

The Torpedo is available as a stand-alone appliance supporting multiple channels, or as a blade within Haivision’s 3U rack mountable chassis, which can hold up to nine Torpedo blades. Torpedos are available immediately and are priced from $1,995.

As with the Makito, Barracuda, Mako(TM), and Piranha(TM) encoders, Haivision has named the Torpedo after one of the ocean’s sharp, fast, and super cool marine animals. A Torpedo is the “electric” member of the ray family, closely related to sharks. Torpedo Rays support an electric discharge ranging from as little as eight volts up to 220 volts.

Haivision is launching the Torpedo family and providing a technology demonstration of its new VF Transit solution at IBC 2010 at stand IP701. IBC is the cornerstone tradeshow for broadcasting and related technologies in Europe, to be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Sept. 10-14.
