Furman Helps Grooves on the Move Inspire Inner-City Youth in Los Angeles Through the Recording Arts

PETALUMA, Calif. — Sept. 13, 2010 — “Inspiring youth through the recording arts” is the goal of Los Angeles’ Grooves on the Move (GOTM) project. Utilizing a self-contained mobile bus outfitted with a recording studio, multiple production workstations, and musical instruments, the gang-prevention program travels throughout the city to offer music and recording activities for inner-city youth. To help GOTM achieve its goal, Panamax/Furman has donated six HA-6AB headphone/monitor amplifiers to the program.

A highlight of mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s Summer Night Lights city-wide gang-reduction effort, the GOTM mobile recording studio — a gutted and renovated recreational vehicle — introduces inner-city youth to the fundamentals of audio engineering, computer literacy, business, and collaborative team building using cutting-edge studio equipment, laptop computers, and musical instruments. Furman’s HA-6AB provides the mobile studio with a unique combination of a headphone amp and a conventional power amp for recording and overdubbing.

“We thank Panamax/Furman for their generous donation, which has been essential to our program’s success. The GOTM mobile studio is scheduled to appear at twenty Los Angeles city parks this summer, and has already provided hundreds of disadvantaged and underprivileged kids with an enriching learning experience,” said Jeff Greenberg of the board of directors for GOTM. “The HA-6ABs save us money by combining a headphone and power amp in one unit, and the kids get very excited when they hear their performances over the amplifiers for the first time. For many, we believe this excitement will turn into the inspiration to realize their potential as recording arts professionals of the future.”

“GOTM is a wonderful program and truly demonstrates the power of music. By harnessing that power, at-risk kids are receiving a unique experience that provides them with an alternative to gangs while inspiring their creativity and opening up a world of possibilities,” said Bill Pollock, president of Panamax and Furman. “We are proud to support GOTM, and are grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of inner-city youth in Los Angeles.”

The HA-6AB is an economical 20-W per channel stereo amplifier. Unlike a conventional power amp, however, it has six headphone outputs on the front panel, each with an associated volume control. When used for overdubbing, this provides GOTM participants with more than adequate loudness in all headphones, and allows each musician to set his or her own comfortable volume level.

When the overdubbing is complete and the musicians remove their headphones, the HA-6AB can power the tape playback through either (or both) of two sets of studio monitor speakers, selected by pressing front-panel pushbuttons. The HA-6AB utilizes an efficient toroidal power transformer for silent operation and low magnetic leakage, as required in a studio environment.
