LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – SEPTEMBER 2010: Chameleon Labs, makers of value-conscious pro audio equipment, announces the release of the TS-1 MKII small diaphragm tube condenser mic. The TS-1 MKII is one of the few small diaphragm tube condensers on the market, unique in design and versatile in application. Driven by newly-designed vacuum tube electronics, the TS-1 MKII delivers an unmatched combination of sparkle and warmth.

The MKII power supply features an adjustable tube heater voltage control that gives the end user the ability to dial in a diverse range of sonic textures. Much like many guitar amps, this allows the user to starve or overdrive the tube, opening up vast range of sonic characteristics with a precision voltage meter for repeatability. The MKII package ships with omni and cardioid capsules. Also available are a hyper-cardioid, a large-diaphragm capsule (selectable omni or cardioid), or the ADP-1 adapter which accommodates AKG CK series heads, along with a range of capsules from other manufacturers that conform to the CK series standards. Between now and Nov 15th, TransAudio Group, the worldwide distributor for Chameleon Labs, is offering buyers of the TS-1 MKII, the TS1-L large diaphragm capsule at no additional cost.

Given its tremendous flexibility and professional sound (used by George Massenburg, among others) perhaps the Chameleon Labs TS-1 MKII’s most amazing feature is its price: MSRP $559. The MKII also uses a plate-loaded, triode-strapped, pentode design with an American-made MIL-Spec 5840 NOS tube. The gold-sputtered, three-micron capsule conveys without distortion to 130 dB. Frequency responses are +/- 4 dB from 30 Hz (omni), 70 Hz (cardioid), and 80 Hz (hyper-cardioid) to 20 kHz. Also included with the TS-1 MKII are a shock mount, 25-foot seven-pin microphone cable, windscreen, aluminum carrying case, and one-year warranty.

“Like all Chameleon Labs products, a huge amount of research and development went into making the TS-1 MKII compete with the very best products in and above its class at a price that’s easy to commit to,” said Tim Stiles, marketing, sales, and support director for Chameleon Labs. “It easily outperforms microphones several times its price, providing a warm, but accurate, pickup for the usual pencil mic candidates like acoustic guitar and cymbals. But with its tube implementation, it also avoids the overly bright sound of solid-state small diaphragm mics, making it useful for strings, percussion, wind instruments, electric guitar, vocals, and more. When you combine all of that with the flexibility of its modular capsule design, we think the TS-1 MKII is yet another example of our commitment to value-conscious audio.”

Brad Lunde, president of TransAudio Group, noted, “In a world where end users are flooded with cheap gear, its important they know there is another option – gear that’s affordable and sounds great. The new Chameleon Labs TS-1 MKII is great example of this type of ” best of class” performance. Chameleon Labs has changed the manufacturing rules. Their products are conceived and designed in the U.S. and built in China, but with a twist. Transformers, switches and other parts that are unique to high-end pro gear are shipped in from the U.S., UK or Europe for assembly. The concept works extremely well. Once you hear this mic, you’ll be stunned at the sonic quality it delivers at this price point.”
