Stage Research Supplies SFX 6 Deluxe for Coyote REP Theatre Company’s “The New Normal?

The New Normal

The New Normal

Stage Research, a leading developer of audio and lighting software, continues its outreach program to local and regional theaters with a new initiative earmarked for the Coyote REP Theatre Company’s production of “The New Normal” in Greenwich Village. The play spotlights the lives of young women who have survived breast cancer.

“We’ve been working to supply theater companies nationwide with low-cost rentals of our SFX 6 Deluxe,” says Stage Research cofounder Carlton Guc. “We furnish them with a computer, keyboard, mouse, Audio Fire 8 sound card and SFX, our flagship product for creating reliable and enriched soundscapes. In the case of Coyote REP, I did some training for their sound designer, Mitch Greenhill, as well.”

Guc learned of Coyote REP’s need to upgrade when he saw an Internet posting by Greenhill requesting help updating the non-profit theater company’s equipment and programs.

“Our theater is a little antiquated,” admits artistic director Donnetta Lavinia Grays. “‘The New Normal’ features a lot of intricate sound elements – a guy playing a guitar, distortion, an answering machine – a lot of space and non-space sound elements. The way we’re set up in the theater, we didn’t know what we were going to get speaker-wise. We needed a sound effects program that would be reliable and stress-free.”

Stage Research to the rescue with a low-cost rental that has enabled Greenhill to use SFX 6 Deluxe to easily program and reliably run all of the play’s sound effects cues for each performance. “It has worked out very well for Mitch,” reports Grays. “SFX has been wonderful. I can’t even begin to express how grateful we are to Stage Research for their help.”

About SFX
SFX is found at all levels of theater from academics to the pros. Professional theaters use the software to create reliable and enriched soundscapes and it has been employed in many award-winning shows, including several Tony Award winners. The academic stage (elementary education through college) and amateur theater appreciate SFX for the high quality of shows it can create and because it can be easily run by novice operators. Students using SFX get the added benefit of learning the software they will most likely work with when they enter the theatrical job market.

SFX 6 provides features that no other product can. It enables designers to refine and create effects on-site rather than having to shuttle back and forth between a studio and performance space. This affords the freedom to optimize sound designs for the acoustics of the space and other components of the performance. SFX 6′s newly rewritten audio engine frees the need for an OS playback engine for hassle-free mixing and placement of audio. SFX 6 features an intuitive user-interface and can be programmed to run complex events with little or no user input.
