When the Broadway blockbuster Fela! transferred to London’s National Theatre on the South Bank this month, Tony Award-winning sound designer Robert Kaplowitz took advantage of the auditorium’s vastly different form to rework his original soundscape, with a Studer Vista 5 digital console at the control centre.

Portraying the life of Nigerian political activist and musician Fela Kuti had required the audience to be immersed in a soundfield as part of the adventurous production–but at the National he decided to go a step further.

Having provided technical infrastructures for three other Glee Clubs around the country, Paul Duffy’s Pacific Sound & Light faced their toughest challenge yet masterminding the new flagship venue, set in a former Jongleurs in Nottingham’s historic British Waterways Building.

Owned by Mark Tughan’s Comic Enterprises, these hybrid theatres host a diverse program of entertainment––from comedy to eclectic folk and emerging and established artists. But it was the enormous width and narrow depth of Nottingham’s main theater, complemented by a ‘letterbox’ balcony with raked seating and difficult sightlines that provided the real challenge. New Consoles Facilitate Move into HD Production

COLOGNO MONZESE, ITALY – Videotime, the production arm of the Mediaset Group that operates three commercial television networks in Italy, recently upgraded Studio 11 with Solid State Logic C100 and C10 Digital Broadcast Consoles. The consoles were installed as part of the facility’s move into all HD production. Despite the economic doom and gloom, UK studio and acoustic design consultancy White Mark Ltd is reporting an exceptionally busy end to 2010, with 17 major projects under construction on four different continents.

Among these are new radio studios in Egypt, a film production and post production complex in Moscow, multimedia facilities for an international advertising agency in New York, a music recording studio in Mexico and three different projects in London, all involving the design and installation of television post production facilities.
