JBL Accepts TEC Hall of Fame Award on Behalf of Lansing Iconic, The World’s First Studio Monitor

Widely regarded as the world’s first studio monitor, the Lansing Iconic was inducted into the TEC Hall of Fame in ceremonies held at the 2011 NAMM show in Anaheim, January 15th. The Iconic was developed specifically to meet the needs of film and audio production control rooms, and was introduced in 1937 by James B. Lansing, the founder of JBL. Its 2-way configuration of a 15-inch woofer and compression driver/horn high-frequency section established the standard for studio monitor systems, still in use today.

Accepting the award for JBL was 35-year JBL veteran Mark Gander. Gander noted, “This is the fifth loudspeaker to be inducted into the TEC Hall of Fame with components designed by Jim Lansing. His loudspeaker design innovations were seminal to virtually all aspects of recorded and reproduced sound, and we at JBL are proud to carry on his traditions and embody his spirit of innovation in our current products.”

The TEC Awards Hall of Fame was created to recognize those individuals, living or deceased, whose careers have best exemplified the spirit of creative and technical excellence in professional audio.

Founded in 1985, the Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards is the foremost program recognizing the achievements of audio professionals. Presented annually by the TEC Foundation for Excellence in Audio, the TEC Awards recognizes the individuals, companies and technical innovations behind the sound of recordings, live performances, films, television, video games, and other media. TEC Awards nominations are made by a panel of industry professionals and voted upon by members of various professional organizations and audio industry websites.
