DANLEY HELPS BELLE AIRE BAPTIST CHURCH CLEAR THE AIR

belle_aire_baptist.JPG

MURFREESBORO, TENNESSEE – MARCH 2011: Belle Aire Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee had a problem. Despite the fact that its gorgeous facility was only a decade old, the sound system for its 1,600-seat sanctuary had progressed from bad to worse. Although its blended worship style didn’t call for hammering SPLs or thunderous bass, it most certainly called for good full-range coverage and intelligibility, both of which were seriously lacking. The church called on Murfreesboro-based Essential Audio to build an audio system they could be proud of. Danley Sound Labs full-range cabinets and subwoofers now deliver even coverage and crisp intelligibility.

“They had a few related problems,” said Ben Williams, owner of Essential Audio. “Coverage was lacking. The main cluster had too narrow a vertical beam width and was aimed too high. Most of direct energy missed the ground floor entirely. A few years ago, they installed front-fill loudspeakers on more

GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING ENGINEER RICH BREEN USES METRIC HALO ULN-8 INTERFACE ON NEW YELLOWJACKETS RECORDING

rich_breen.JPG

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA – MARCH 2011: Rich Breen’s quick and early ascension to the upper strata of professional recording a quarter-century ago was not owing to a flashy style or a voguish sound, but rather a well-considered, well-rounded approach to sound recording that was, and continues to be, in equal measures scientific and artistic. He holds a degree in electrical engineering and has studied music, a synergism that has contributed to his roster of clients and recordings that include the Yellowjackets, Charlie Haden, Dianne Reeves, Herbie Hancock, Norah Jones, members of the Rolling Stones, and Ramsey Lewis. Breen has been nominated for the Non-Classical Engineering Grammy, and dozens of his recordings have been nominated or won Grammy Awards in various categories over the years. Last year he won a Latin Grammy for the Ivan Lins/Metropolis Orchestra Recording. In recent years, Breen has become more

JUPITER GETS PINSTRIPES

edina_1.JPG

EDINA, MINNESOTA – MARCH 2011: Pinstripes delivers to its patrons the unique combination of superb Italian-American fare, stately lanes of bowling, bocce courts, and banquet and party space for up to six-hundred guests. Until recently, only the denizens of suburban Chicago enjoyed Pinstripes in its two locations, but success spurred the owners to open a third location in Edina, Minnesota, just past the Minneapolis city limit. GMK Integrated Systems (Lombard, Illinois) designed and installed the audio systems in all three locations, turning, in the newest location, to Symetrix’ recently-introduced, “zero learning curve” Jupiter hardware and “app-based” software for system processing in the banquet rooms.

The audio systems in the older Pinstripes locations worked well enough, but when GMK system designer Chris King heard about Symetrix’ new Jupiter series, the functional fit seemed perfect, despite Jupiter’s lower cost. Unique in the industry, the Symetrix Jupiter hardware operates with software “apps” more

METRIC HALO ULN-8 BATTLES FOR LOS ANGELES

battle_la.JPG

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – MARCH 2011: The capabilities of digital audio have brought about a paradigm shift in motion picture location sound recording over the past decade, away from traditional analog hardware to more versatile software-based solutions. As production mixer Paul Ledford, C.A.S. recently discovered, a digital audio solution such as Metric Halo’s ULN-8 interface can also handle the increasingly more complex demands of a modern-day film shoot, and may well herald the next step in the evolution of location sound.

Ledford finished work on Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles, a Sony Pictures movie about a group of U.S. Marines confronting and combating an alien invasion, which placed some unusual demands on the mixer’s location sound cart setup. The multi-camera shoot involved many busy action scenes with a lot going on at once, he says, and with very little rehearsal. “And the director wanted everybody miked – which is more
