API ENJOYS HEIGHTENED 1608 SALES IN ARGENTINA

api_1608_luisbacque.JPG

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA: While analog recording equipment manufacturer API saw widespread and consistent success with its 1608 console last year, the company is already on track to rival its performance in 2010. As an example, API’s Argentine dealer, SL Audio, has already sold three 1608s. The new console owners include Barbara Zampini, Palito Ortega and Luis Bacque.

Barbara Zampini, bass player and widow of famed punk rocker Dee Dee Ramone, “splits her time between Las Vegas and Buenos Aires,” said Daniel Paracha, sales and support engineer at SL Audio. “She’s currently building a nice project studio in Argentina, and [when considering recording gear,] her engineers Jeronimo Escajal and Hernan Perez advised her to get the API 1608. [All other equipment] has been purchased around it.” According to Paracha, Zampini will be recording and mixing all of her future tracks through the more

SOLOMON AWARD-WINNING CHURCH RELIES ON DANLEY LOUDSPEAKERS AND ASHLY DSP

hollowell_exterior.JPG

WAYNESBORO, PENNSYLVANIA: Hollowell Brethren in Christ Church is nestled among the farm fields and southern slopes of the Appalachian Mountains near Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. When the skyrocketing cost of construction materials ruined the church’s plan to build a new facility to accommodate its burgeoning membership, Hollowell fell back on plan B – convert the gymnasium into a dual-purpose room. Steve Christiano of G.A.D.G.e.T. Media (Maryland) came on board, even though he was dubious about the prospect of building the lowly ‘gymnatorium.’ But careful planning, abundant acoustical treatment, and first-rate gear, including Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers and Ashly DSP, turned the project into an award-winning renovation that has attracted a lot of favorable attention. Indeed, Hollowell earned the Church Production Magazine and Worship Facilities Magazine’s, Solomon Award for Best Church Design Renovation Project for fewer than eight hundred seats.

“To me, the word ‘gymnatorium’ screams compromise, as in, ‘does neither one more

MIAMI STUDIO FINDS ITS SOUND WITH A 1608

studio_26.JPG

MIAMI, FLORIDA: Professional analog audio gear manufacturer API has just shipped a 16-channel 1608 to a new premier recording facility in Miami-Studio 26. According to the facility’s staff, the console provides exactly the kind of sound that they were looking for.

“After looking at all of the other options on the market, we decided to go with the API 1608,” said PJ McGinnis, Studio 26′s manager and main engineer. “I really love the vintage look and sound of the 1608, but I also love that it offers new, modern features that make today’s recording process quicker and more flexible than a vintage console. The 1608 seemed to fit perfectly with the type of projects that will be worked on at Studio 26,” said McGinnis.

The studio’s first project is for up-and-coming singer-songwriter Cris Cab’s debut album. Cab, who is just more

CHICKENFOOT USES API 1608 FOR NEW RECORD

chad_1608.JPG

JESSUP, MARYLAND – MARCH 2011: Working on a follow-up album to its 2009 debut, rock and roll super group Chickenfoot has recently finished recording new tracks on a 16-channel API 1608. The band, comprised of Sammy Hagar (Van Halen), Michael Anthony (Van Halen), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and solo musician Joe Satriani, worked at Hagar’s Red Rocker Sound studio – an annex to the lead singer’s house that was once a rehearsal space. According to veteran recording and mixing engineer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Guns ‘N Roses, Metallica), the 1608 played a pivotal role in capturing Chickenfoot’s music.

“I absolutely love the sound of the 1608,” said Fraser. “It’s classic API. The 1608 shares the reliability of other API gear. In fact, it works so well and so transparently that I seldom had to think about the mechanics of what I was doing on the board. It was more

ASHLY CONNECTS AT ST. PETERSBURG CATHOLIC DIOCESE CONFERENCE CENTER

favalora_hall_outside.JPG

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA – FEBRUARY 2011: The Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg, Florida designed the Archbishop Favalora Conference Center in nearby Lutz, Florida to be more than just a sterile and cerebral place for meetings. Built on an idyllic little lake and part of the larger Bethany Center, the new building sets a spiritual and reflective tone for the Diocese and for the other groups that rent it. Its three large meeting rooms can be combined depending on the nature of the event, and its three smaller rooms accommodate breakout sessions. A wraparound porch encourages informal conversation and camaraderie. When the center’s sound reinforcement and room combining system were not working correctly, it took the Diocese very little time to call in its audio engineering consultant of twenty years, Randi Crooks of Magnum Audio Group (Tampa, Florida), to gut and replace it. more

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – FEBRUARY 2011: AV Solutions is one of New York state’s premier A/V companies and has been defining presentation technology’s leading edge for over thirty years. Ever on the lookout for inspired new equipment that improves the performance-to-cost ratio for his clients, AV Solutions design engineer Karl Maciag recently called on Ashly’s new pêma unit – the industry’s first fully-featured DSP to be integrated with multi-channel amplification – to deliver state-of-the-art AV solutions at a fire station and at a health insurance provider’s facility, at a considerable space and cost savings. The firehouse now has an awesome-sounding, flexible hi-fi system, and the hospital has a privacy-protecting white noise system that is both unobtrusive and undefeatable.

While AV Solutions sales person Garry Krause was delivering a Smart Board to the Sheridan Park Fire Department firehouse, a few of the more

SYMNET EXPRESS TRAVELS TO THE GREAT SMOKEY MOUNTAINS

dolly_statue_1.JPG

SEVIERVILLE, TENNESSEE – MARCH 2011: Picturesque Sevier County in eastern Tennessee serves as the western gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. It is also the childhood home of country legend Dolly Parton and the current home of her theme park, Dollywood. The Sevier County Courthouse, where a bronze statue of Ms. Parton serves as a frequent backdrop in visitors’ photos, is an icon in its own right. Built in 1896, its grand architecture is a source of civic pride. The Sevier County Commissioners meet in an annex to the courthouse, which seats seventy-five people. The public attends the meetings, which have, at times, devolved into heated arguments in which commissioners speak (or shout!) without listening to others. Partly to rein them in and partly to correct a collection of other audio issues, the county called on Kelvin Francis of Knoxville-based KC Sound. Francis relied on SymNet open-architecture DSP to deliver more
