ETRI and KBS Award T-VIPS Korean Games Gold after winning against Uncompressed and MPEG-4 Contribution Solutions

T-VIPS JPEG2000-based Video Gateway provides live, high-quality 3D contribution solution for the IAAF World Athletics Championship between Daegu Stadium and the Korean Broadcast System (KBS) Media Centre

Oslo, Norway – T-VIPS, a global leader in professional video contribution and distribution solutions, today announced that its TVG450 JPEG2000 Gateway solution was deployed by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and Korean Broadcast System (KBS) to provide the transport of 3D video from the IAAF World Athletic Championships at Daegu Stadium to the KBS media centre.

The T-VIPS JPEG2000 solution was chosen after rigorous on-site 3D trials earlier this year. These trials pitted the T-VIPS JPEG2000 solution against uncompressed and MPEG-4 based contribution solutions, with the T-VIPS solution being selected due to its highly impressive left/right eye video synchronization, low latency, ease-of-use, high-quality and cost-efficiency.

“It’s exciting to be back in Korea, where our 3D journey started with the pioneering transport of live 3D video back in 2009,? said Johnny Dolvik, CEO, T-VIPS. “The fact that we had taken part in a 3-way competition, with uncompressed and MPEG-4 contribution systems, made it even more satisfying that ETRI and KBS chose our technology as the 3D transport solution for the 2011 World Athletic Championships. This is further validation of our belief that for live events, JPEG2000 is demonstrably the best transport solution for high-quality 3D video.?

“After rigorous testing, we chose the T-VIPS solution because it delivered the best viewing experience due to its combination of left/right eye synchronization, low-latency and high-quality? said Dr. Namho Hur, Managing Director, Dept. of Broadcasting Systems Research of ETRI. “It’s great that through the use of T-VIPS’ technology, we have been able to cost-effectively provide Korean viewers with a rewarding, 3D experience of the World Athletic Championships in Daegu.?

TVG450 Video Gateway
Designed for real-time contribution and distribution of broadcast quality video over IP networks, the TVG450 enables transmission of compressed HD, SD and 3D television over Gigabit Ethernet and provides increased density, with up to 1 3G-SDI, 2 HD-SDI or 4 SDI channels in each unit. The solution is ideal for the transport of 3D video footage, effortlessly providing the left/right eye synchronization that can be such a problem for other solutions. The TVG450 takes advantage of the unmatched quality of JPEG2000 compression combined with the inherent flexibility of IP to offer broadcasters an efficient, affordable and scalable solution for studio quality high definition video contribution. The TVG450 is compact, cost-effective, supports lossless and visually lossless compression and has user-friendly configuration and control.

Key features include:
· High performance left and right eye image synchronization
· 10 bit, 4:2:2 video quality
· Support for multiple JPEG2000 compressed video channels
· Frame-by-frame encoding which increases resiliency
· Very low delay (< 60 ms)
· Robust transmission of HDTV signals, due to:
– Flexible Forward Error Correction
– Error concealment
– Ethernet and IP QoS functionality.
