Mountain Lake PBS Upgrades Control Room to HD with Broadcast Pix Granite 5000 Live Video Production System

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced that Plattsburgh, N.Y.-based Mountain Lake PBS (WCFE) has installed a Granite™ 5000 live video production system as part of its transition to full HD production and distribution. Completed in March, the updated control room and studio produces a variety of local programs, including the weekly Mountain Lake Journal newsmagazine.

The PBS member station serves the Burlington-Plattsburgh market (DMA #95), which includes areas of Vermont, New York, and Quebec. Director of engineering Charlie Zarbo said the studio and control room upgrades were the final stage of the station’s HD migration, which began with master control in 2007. The Granite 5000, purchased through HB Communications, replaced an aging Grass Valley 200 switcher. The HD upgrade also included new Hitachi Z-HD5000 studio cameras, Clear-Com intercom system, and Yamaha DM2000VCM digital audio mixer.

Zarbo has been very pleased with the Granite 5000 and is a fan of its PixButtons, which dynamically display sources and file names. “The control surface is nice, pretty intuitive. Whatever changes you make are reflected in the PixButtons, which is nice,” he said. “It’s got very good bang for the buck. Broadcast Pix does it all in one box at a very attractive price. We like it a lot.”

Beyond its 2 M/E switcher, Granite 5000 provides Mountain Lake PBS with a number of integrated Fluent™ workflow tools, including a clip store that is used regularly for productions. Although Granite includes a built-in Inscriber GS CG, Zarbo said the station produces its graphics with Adobe Photoshop, then easily transfers them to Granite via Fluent Watch-Folders.

Mountain Lake PBS replaced its CRT monitor wall with two 50-inch LCDs, which are fed by Granite’s built-in Fluent-View, providing a complete display for the technical director and producer. The control room also has smaller monitors for dedicated CG and audio use that are also fed by Fluent-View.

Zarbo said Fluent-View is very easy to arrange, so every TD tends to create their own on-screen look. “It’s very flexible,” he explained. “You can create a layout, save it, and recall it for a specific shoot.”

About Broadcast Pix Broadcast Pix is the leader in integrated live video production systems. Its systems provide the best control surface for combining cameras, clips and graphics to create compelling live video. These surfaces enable total control of the built-in multi-format switcher, clip store, graphics system with a Harris or Chyron CG, and device controls. Its Fluent™ workflow enables files and data to be easily incorporated from other parts of the studio. Broadcast Pix systems are a fraction of the cost of a conventional control room to buy, staff and operate. System range from small systems controlled by a touch-screen to sophisticated 2 M/E control panels. Customers include leading broadcast, corporate, education, religious, government, webcast, entertainment and mobile studios in more than 80 countries. Learn more at www.broadcastpix.com.

Telemark Youth Camp Upgrades with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact 24

TELEMARK, Norway — A Soundcraft Si Compact 24 digital console has been purchased by the Vatnar Leirsted youth camp in Telemark, Norway.

Owned by the Pentecostal churches of Telemark, camps are arranged several times a year, each attended by between 80-110 youths, while the camp facilities are also rented out to churches and other organisations around the year. The Vatnar church itself has 110 seats and each summer a Bible camp takes place in a tent with 350-400 seats.

As part of a systematic facility upgrade to accommodate the expanding capacity, it was Vatnar Leirsted’s technical adviser Bjørn Ivar Haugdal who recommended the Soundcraft console to the board, for use on their new campus. This would enable them to stage youth concerts, worship and small bands with improved technical facilities and the board was happy to adopt this over the analogue alternatives it reviewed. The order was placed with local dealer, Belco A/S.

“The Si Compact will be used as a FOH and monitor desk in the new tent we have purchased for our bible camp, which will be capable of 1,300 seats,” Bjørn Ivar confirmed. “Being portable, it will also be used in some of our other venues.”

The Si Compact was the most suitable desk for three reasons, Ivar continued. “Ease of use, ease of use and ease of use! It offered an easy transition from analogue. Several other digital consoles in this price range had similar features but had a significantly more difficult user interface.”

Other factors in shaping his decision were the extremely good preamps, GEQ on all outputs and the high buss count. “And comparing the footprint with similarly priced analogue desks, with all the outboard gear necessary, it became a no-brainer,” Ivar said. “The minute we opened the box containing the console, we felt at home.”

Aside from four stereo Lexicon processors, the Si Compact 24 features 24 recallable mic pre amps plus four stereo returns, AES-in and 64 input option slot with a capacity to combine up to 40 of these inputs to mix; each input is fully equipped with compressors, gates, parametric EQ, high pass filter and delay.

With all the technicians either self-taught or working on a voluntary basis, the console ultimately had to be highly intuitive. “The beauty of this console is that any 15-year-old kid can operate it at a basic level after 20 minutes of instruction,” Ivar noted. “Give them a couple of hours and they would be able to take advantage of the more advanced features too.”

With Lexicon effects on board, all the volunteers that have been given the opportunity to operate the console have expressed excitement over how easy this console is to use, confirms Bjørn Ivar. “And those with previous experience on digital consoles are even more excited!”

Eastern Star Church Opens Northwest Campus

BUENA PARK, Calif.—CSD, Inc. of Fort Wayne, Indiana recently completed a design/build project for the new Northwest Campus of Eastern Star Church in Indianapolis. The church began its history in 1920 with a congregation of 12, and now, three campuses later, has grown to a congregation of over 25,000. The new location was required to fill the need for a larger worship space to accommodate the growing congregation. It also provides a presence for Eastern Star Church on the west side of the city.

“We were chosen as the church’s design/build partner for audio, video and lighting, including systems for the sanctuary as well as significant performance systems in auxiliary spaces such as a chapel, conference rooms, youth and the children’s area,” states Doug Hood, Owner/President, CSD.

A major undertaking, the 3,000-seat contemporary gospel northwest campus features a choir, band, praise team and for most sermons, has 120 members located on the stage. Its new audio system is centered around a NEXO GEO S12 line array consisting of 14 GEO S1210s and 27 GEO S1230s all in white, Yamaha PM5D-RH digital audio console at front of house, and M7CL-48 used for monitors.

“We always stay on top of new products from manufacturers, and since CSD and Eastern Star Church were looking for a high output, yet, small format speaker system that could keep up with the high-energy worship style of the church, we knew the NEXO system would be a perfect fit,” says Hood.

Hood noted that Yamaha consoles were chosen for this location, as was the case with the first two Eastern Star Church campuses, and that console familiarity by church staff members plays a large part. “Another deciding factor for us was the similarity in the M7CL experience as compared to the PM5D. We felt it was important for volunteers to be able to move from monitors to FOH with as little change as possible.

Additional audio system components include 12 NEXO PS15s and four PS10s, NEXO Alpha Subs, eight 4×4 NXAMPs, and one 4×1 NXAMP. CSD also installed DLP 10K Digital Projectors, a Panasonic PTZ Cam System, and ETC and Leprecon lighting systems. Two Yamaha P3500S amps, two P7000S amps, Aviom Personal Mixing, Aviom Digital Snake, and Worx Audio speakers are used in perimeter rooms.

BROADWAY’S LONGEST RUN… MASQUE SOUND CELEBRATES DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY

75 Years Of Hits – From South Pacific to Book Of Mormon

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ: Celebrating its 75th anniversary with a client roster that includes: Jersey Boys, Billy Elliott, Mary Poppins, Memphis and, The Book of Mormon,
Masque Sound, has been a fixture on The Great White Way since 1936 when three stagehands pooled their resources to create a new firm. An immediate success, Masque has provided flawless audio for the original Broadway productions of Oklahoma, South Pacific, Grease, Phantom Of The Opera, Les Miserables, Cats, Mama Mia, Lion King and countless others.

Under the guidance of 3rd generation-owner Geoff Shearing, this leading sound reinforcement, design and installation company has steadily expanded the size and scope of its services. Their 2004 move to a 70,000 sq. ft. corporate headquarters in East Rutherford, NJ was preceded by the 2002 purchase of Professional Wireless Systems. Florida-based leaders in the development and implementation of wireless technology, PWS counts over a dozen Super Bowl broadcasts to their credit, along with assignments for the NHL, wireless upgrades for NBC TV and many other complex broadcast, entertainment, corporate and government projects.

In 2007, Masque Sound added a highly successful permanent systems installation division to their growing services. Projects include Le Poisson Rouge, the celebrated Greenwich Village club whose eclectic on-stage talent, extraordinary acoustics and state-of-the art sound system, draws music fans from around the world; as well as NYU’s James L. Dolan Recording/Teaching facility. Masque Sound has also installed the complex systems for NY’s new DiMenna Center for Classical Music; the sound system renovation for the classic New Victory Theater on West 42nd St.; and the critical acoustic sound system upgrade for NY’s historic St. Bartholomew’s Church on Park Ave.

In celebration of their Diamond Anniversary, company General Manager, Stephanie Hansen reached out to legendary graphic designer Milton Glaser for an update to the firm’s graphic image. “I’ve been a fan of Milton’s for a long time, and recently saw a documentary on his work,” Ms. Hansen remarked. “We were thrilled when he agreed to marry his talents with our existing brand.”

“A 75th Anniversary is a significant milestone,” remarks company principal Geoff Shearing. “We are grateful to our many long-term clients, and to a dedicated in-house team, some of whom have been with us over twenty years. My father remains active, and enthusiastically monitors our on-going success from his New Hampshire home, just as my grandfather took great pride in dad’s nurturing of our legacy.

“I grew up watching them make decisions about what new technology to invest in, and how to grow the business in the most logical way,” Shearing adds. “Their most important lesson was that customer service is the basis for all success. Our concerns for solving client technical challenges in the most creative, efficient and cost-effective way has continued to be a key element in our on-going success.

“We are privileged to work on blue ribbon projects that run the gamut from hit Broadway shows to network TV and world-class corporate events,” Shearing concludes. “I look forward to celebrating our 100th anniversary in 2036!”

Community Appoints Mittelmann for Asia-Pacific Region Sales

Thomas Mittlemann

Community Professional Loudspeakers is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Mittelmann as Director of Business Development, Asia-Pacific.

A well-known industry figure, Mittelmann most recently worked with Powersoft, successfully concentrating on global brand building and marketing while overseeing sales in the Asian region. However, it was during his years with Lab.gruppen when rapid growth led from managing all overseas sales to focusing primarily on Asia, prompting his relocation from Germany to Singapore in 2007.

Mittelmann previously had spent eight years with Community handling European sales. His return to the company is well-timed as Community continues to see significant growth in international markets and expand its already comprehensive product range.

Julia Lee, Sales and Marketing Director of Community comments, “Thomas brings invaluable international sales experience and market knowledge to Community. He is joining our team at a pivotal time for our company, which has been experiencing strong growth despite the economic climate. We’re excited to have him on board to help us grow our presence in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in important expanding markets like China and India.”

Thomas Mittelmann adds, “I’m very happy to be re-joining Community and in many ways it feels a bit like coming home; most of the same great people and spirit. But ten years is a long time and Community has grown on all levels and with a much expanded product range. During this time I have also had the privilege of learning a lot, much of which I look forward to using in my new role and the markets I will be working in. Together we will serve the needs of the region even better, to the benefit of all existing and future Community customers.”
