HARMAN’s Studer to Host Broadcast Academy Sessions at AES 2011

NEW YORK, New York — The overwhelming success of HARMAN’s Studer Broadcast Academy continues with sessions at the AES 2011 convention in New York City on October 21 and 22. The Broadcast Academy sessions will include hands-on training for Studer’s Vista consoles as part of certification modules that will provide engineers with proof of efficiency with the Vista line.

Designed to educate and support the interests of audio engineers around the world, the Studer Broadcast Academy has been a huge success since launching in July, with sessions taking place throughout the United States. Below are some comments from attendees of the previous sessions:

“The Academy is really great because I’ve been looking at the Studer versus some other consoles, so it’s nice to see it in action and in a mockup of what it would actually be doing in the field…It’s nice to just sit down and look at the product because I think a lot of people aren’t exposed to the quality of Studer—it’s a huge leap above the other manufacturers…To go through the Academy and be able to talk about it and have some Q&A’s is fantastic—you wouldn’t get it if you just turned up at a show because no one would have the time to talk to me. It’s just a fantastic opportunity.” – Chris Rudyk, Broadcast Lane Studio

“The course is great—they gave us the real lowdown on the Vista 9 and Vista 5. They answered any questions that we had and showed us all the details from the top down.” – Sam Kokajko, StageTech

“It’s absolutely a priceless experience to be able to put your hands on these and actually try them out and see how they work.” – Joe Piland, Dobbs Stanford

“I love how they show you all about the mixers and they show you very simply about it. I love the openness of the mixer—the operator doesn’t have to have a great knowledge of the mixer to be able to operate it, but it’s also complex and you can do many things with it.” – Ty Horstman, Pure Flame Studios

The Studer Broadcast Academy sessions will be held in the HARMAN truck (Space T1) at AES on October 21 and 22, 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM.

Throughout the AES show, the HARMAN truck will also feature demonstrations of products from other HARMAN brands, including AKG microphones, JBL studio monitors, Lexicon digital processors and Soundcraft digital consoles.

MOBILE BROADCAST INNOVATOR, CORPLEX, RELIES ON FUJIFILM CUSTOMER SERVICE TO MAINTAIN ITS REPUTATION FOR EXCELLENCE

Wayne, N.J. – Chicago’s Corplex Mobile Television has earned its status as an award-winning innovator in live broadcasting over more than 25 years covering sports, news and entertainment events.

So, it’s no surprise that this pioneer in all-digital mobile production has demonstrated a commitment to innovative technology along with its latest order of lenses from FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division. This order coincides with the recent opening of the division’s fifth service center – in nearby Hanover Park, Illinois – this past spring. The new service facility was started to provide more locally available and immediate customer support to its Chicago-area customer base, something Corplex is already taking advantage of.

Corplex is constantly seeking the “latest and greatest” technology for its facilities, which now includes three 53-foot expanding HD mobile units each with a graphics/support trailer, and reliable, state of the art customer service is essential to its continued success.

According to Corplex CEO Carter Ruehrdanz, “We’ve been using FUJINON lenses for so many years, we probably now have more than sixty lenses. And we’re so busy, we use them every week. Other companies also make great lenses, but we’re really happy with the fact that Fujifilm now has local service here in Chicago. We can’t afford to be down at all. We’re especially impressed with the more aggressive turnaround time and pricing we’re seeing.”

All of the new FUJINON lenses incorporate some of the most innovative features in the industry. To pair with its Sony HDC1500 cameras, Corplex has chosen two of FUJINON’s most advanced and industry-leading XA101x8.9BESM Super Telephoto EFP HD lenses, six HA23x7.6BERM Telephoto ENG HD lenses with 2x extenders, and two HA14x4.5BERM Super Wide Angle ENG/EFP HD lenses with 2.2x extenders.

The new lenses will be used on Corplex trucks for large sporting events, including NFL football, Major League Baseball playoffs, golf and hockey, as well as high profile entertainment programs. Ruehrdanz said, “We stayed with FUJINON lenses so that all the big lenses are from the same manufacturer, and we can swap things around. Our Platinum truck has two 101x lenses in addition to five 87x. The longer 101x lenses are an important element and can make a huge difference in the production. We’re also putting the new ENG lenses right to work on our handheld cameras for the beginning of the NFL season.”

In addition to their new purchases, Corplex has a large inventory of FUJINON lenses that offer a consistency in lens design that allows the servo modules and controllers to work on any box lens regardless of their age. “Because of this we’re able to have plenty of spares and additional pieces to make them full servo when needed,” said Ruehrdanz.

“It’s our job to supply every piece of gear and make sure everything’s working all the time,” said Ruehrdanz. “That’s why having local customer service is so important. We’re just looking for quality, reliability and good support. FUJINON, its lenses, and its new service center have absolutely made a big difference to us in achieving that goal.”

HARMAN’s Studer Vista Remote Access Provides Vista Console Owners With Instant Support

NEW YORK, New York — Building on its steadfast commitment to providing the best customer support in the industry, HARMAN’s Studer is introducing Vista Remote Access for its Vista line of digital mixing consoles. Vista Remote Access allows Vista owners to access and manage their console from anywhere in the world at any time, all on a secure network.

Remote Access offers additional technical support directly from Studer factory-trained engineers, enabled with real-time monitoring and system interrogation of the user’s Vista system. The system can be used to address and support anything from system setup and configuration, to real-time screening of log files to identify problems with the Vista system, even during live productions.

The Remote Access operation is simple to set up and utilizes a closed network for maximum system security. Vista owners simply dedicate a PC or laptop as the Remote Access interface, which hosts the secure network connection. The computer hosts a third-party Remote Access application and the Studer Virtual Network Connection (VNC). At Studer, a technician uses the VNC connection as the secure portal to access the owner’s Vista system, giving them monitoring and control capabilities from their location.

Through the network security system, the PC or laptop provides Studer with direct access to the owner’s Vista without exposing it to the Internet or any form of open network. The Remote Access uses encryption and has a minimum of two levels of password protection, providing another layer of security and confidence.

Vista customers can take advantage of Remote Access at any point of ownership. If time and resources are limited, Studer technicians are able to walk the user through the system for training, or work together online to troubleshoot user or function-related questions. This is strong support for any facility or production working with new engineers, freelancer, or contractors who are not familiar with the Vista system or show configuration. It can also act as a tool to help users save time by allowing the Vista technician to prepare for a show or event.

Remote Access is available for any Studer Vista 5, Vista 5 SR, Vista 8, Vista 9, running V4.2.00 software or above. The latest software is available as a free upgrade. Interested Vista customers can contact their local Studer support center. The Remote Access package is included in all Extended Warranties purchased from Studer USA or a Studer Sales representative can add it to the customer’s system configuration at time of purchase.

Xantech’s A/V Control Technology Used for Tour Center at Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations Plant

CARLSBAD, CA, October 18, 2011 — The recently completed movie theater located within the brand new Vaughn L. Beals Tour Center at the Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations plant in York, Pennsylvania, includes A/V control products from Xantech, a leader in the field of audio/video remote control and distribution for 40 years. SDK Electronics of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, outfitted the theater, where visitors begin the one-hour factory tour, installing a Xantech CSPLCD39G 3.9-inch Smartpad LCD Graphic Touchpanel and a WIC1200 Web Intelligent Controller to manage the presentation’s audio, video and lighting.

The Smartpad LCD Graphic Touchpanel and the WIC1200 in combination offer fully automated control of the movie presentation, which takes visitors through the famed motorcycle manufacturer’s history. The film starts with a single touch of the Xantech Touchpanel, explains Scott Koons, owner of SDK Electronics. “The system sits in idle mode until the tour guides bring the visitors in. They touch one button on the screen that says ‘play’ and the movie starts to run. The WIC box gets a signal, tells a Crestron lighting controller to dim the lights, and turns on an audio sense to the Blu-ray Disc player. As soon as it senses that audio is no longer present – in other words, the player is in full stop – it tells the Crestron to relight the room.”

The system is also programmed with an alternate mode for employee meetings. “When they hold a meeting in the theater they can touch a button that says ‘presentation’ and it will switch over to a presentation mode,” says Koons.

The Xantech products offered an affordable control solution for automating the theater’s A/V system, according to Koons. Although the system is relatively simple, the controller does need to support some specific interface capabilities. “I needed to have some way to automatically turn on the lights. The WIC1200 gave me the ability to do two-way communications as well as system status sensing.” A more complex and more costly unit was just not necessary, he adds: “It would have been overkill to spend that kind of money on a competing product for what little I needed to do, especially since the WIC box does everything I needed it to do for this system.”

The Xantech Touchpanel interfaces directly with the theater’s JVC projector. “The only codes we send to the projector are on, off and source select, so we use those straight out of the keypad because I don’t need any sense on that,” explains Koons, adding, “The only thing I need to send to the Lexicon DC2 processor is power on and source select.”

The presentation theater at the Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations plant (York, Pennsylvania), where assembly of the Soft Tail, Touring and Tri-Glide models, as well as limited-production factory-custom motorcycles, occurs. The facility features recently installed A/V control products from Xantech.

The rest of the theater’s audio system, which includes EAW loudspeakers in a 7.1 configuration with Crest amplification, is initiated through the use of a Surge X power sequencer. A 159-inch 16:9 HDTV format Da-Lite fixed wall screen completes the A/V presentation setup.

Koons also installed a Xantech CSPLCD64G 6.4-inch Smartpad LCD Graphic Touchpanel in the employee cafeteria at the new plant. “They can hold 450-person meetings there. It has four screens, four projectors, a scaler and an SPLCD64 controlling it, along with a couple of relay packs and a 1×8 RS232 router.”

The Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations plant, established in York in 1973, assembles the company’s Soft Tail, Touring and Tri-Glide models. Following the demolition of 42 separate buildings and a year of construction, a brand new, robot-assisted manufacturing plant opened on the site on August 1, 2011, that combines all of its manufacturing lines and warehousing in one 600,000-square-foot facility. Over eight thousand tourists have reportedly visited the new Vaughn L. Beals Tour Center and toured the new factory in its first two months of operation.

VIENNA, Austria – Highlighting the latest in reliable digital wireless capabilities, HARMAN’s AKG introduces its DMS 70 digital wireless microphone system – the first true uncompressed digital wireless system in the industry. The DMS 70 operates in the 2.4GHz ISM band, a worldwide license-free frequency range, to ensure top-quality wireless operation for every customer.

“HARMAN’s AKG DMS 70 system offers exceptional studio-quality sound, thanks to its uncompressed digital audio transmission capability,” said Thomas Umbauer, Product Manager, AKG. “The DMS 70 is designed for the most exacting applications where the highest level of wireless audio performance is required.”

DMS 70 is ideal for live sound, club sound, conferences, seminars, schools and universities and other critical uses. The entire DMS 70 package includes: AKG’s DSR 70 Receiver, DPT 70 Digital Pocket Transmitter and DHT 70 Digital Handheld Transmitter wireless mic, as well as a DSR 70 rack mount kit and power supply and other accessories.

All DMS 70 devices are available separately and in the following packages: the Vocal Set Dual, Instrumental Set Dual and Vocal/Instrumental Set Dual.

The DMS 70 features bidirectional communication between the transmitter and receiver and dynamic frequency selection that provides “intelligent” operation. Its easy setup functions make the system simple to use even for less experienced operators. DMS 70 operates with AES 128-bit encryption, OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing) modulation and digital controlled antenna diversity for clear, secure 2-way wireless communication.

The DSR 70 receiver can receive up to four channels of audio, which can be mixed down directly to its balanced XLR sum output. The DHT 70 mic employs AKG’s D5 supercardioid capsule to deliver outstanding sound quality with feedback and noise suppression.

DMS 70 offers a number of additional features including auto power off function for all transmitters, power off from receiver side for all connected transmitters, battery status monitoring, adjustable mic/guitar input level (DPT 70), high/low level gain switch (DHT 70) and more.

Sharpy Fixtures and grandMA2 Consoles Selected for “The Sing Off” and “63rd Primetime Emmy Awards”

Sing Off

Sing Off

Atomic Lighting of Lititz, Pennsylvania scored two high-profile TV gigs for its Clay Paky lighting fixtures and grandMA2 lighting consoles when it supplied gear for season three of NBC’s a cappella singing competition, “The Sing Off” and FOX’s live telecast of the “63rd Primetime Emmy Awards” from LA’s Nokia Theatre. A.C.T Lighting is the distributor in North America for both Clay Paky and grandMA.

Felix Peralta, who shares lighting director duties with Kevin Lawson on “The Sing Off,” used 27 Clay Paky Alpha Profile 700 and 30 Sharpy fixtures for the show. “A.C.T demo’d Sharpy for me, and I instantly fell in love with all the possibilities of their effects,” he recalls. “I liked the throw, the speed of movement, the tightness of the beam and the little prism you can slide in to create a break up.”

Season three of “The Sing Off” will air 12 shows with multiple performances, so designer Allen Branton assembled an array of fixtures to lend variety week to week. “We’ve taped the first ten episodes, and the Sharpys have given us a look we really hadn’t seen before,” he notes. “They were so tight and bright that we didn’t need a lot of haze to have an impact: We were able to create some nice signature looks. We also featured an upstage wall of 18 Sharpys, as tight as they could go, shooting straight out at the camera to create and augment the tension and suspense surrounding the announcement of the winners for that evening. The producers have been thrilled with them and their zero failure rate.”

The producers are not the only ones who are pleased with the Sharpys’ performance. Lighting Designer Allen Branton is also “a big fan,” says Peralta. “He’s seen every light there is, and he’s really impressed by how tight the Sharpy’s beam is and how fast the lights move. Ever since he started using them he talks about them all the time – they’re a hot ticket item for his stable of shows.”

A pair of grandMA2 light consoles are on hand for “The Sing Off.” “We made the jump to grandMA2 with the Miss America pageant this year,” Peralta reports. “I haven’t gone back since. I’m a big fan of the grandMA2 and all their new software features.” We used 48 universes of DMX to accommodate the gear-heavy music series. “The show file gets bigger and bigger with each episode; we’ve compiled hundreds of effects. We can’t rave enough about how solid the NPUs are – they’re able to process 10 shows with different performances on each show and they never slow down.”

For the Emmy Awards Peralta, Kevin Lawson and Tom Beck served as lighting directors with Allen Branton lighting designer. “The top of the set had a flown half-circle truss 120 feet long, like a crown over the stage,” says Peralta. “We wanted to give the show a fresh, edgy look for Mark Burnett Productions, which was new to the awards this year. So we peppered some Sharpys in the crown with a bunch of wash lights. The Sharpys were great at cutting through and giving a nice iconic look on wide bumpers and the winner announcements. They were a nice accent piece to go to.”

Two grandMA2 lights acted as the main consoles for the production with a grandMA2 full size on hand for back up. The primary desks ran 24 universes of DMX. “Although there was not a lot of cueing involved, the Emmys are very high profile and had to be executed perfectly. We wouldn’t have gone with anything other than the very stable grandMA2 network. We would never compromise a show such as the Emmys!”

Peralta also gives kudos to the support he and his colleagues received from Atomic Lighting for both shows. “They are very hands on, and their systems are rock solid out of the box. With Atomic, we’re up and running on the first day-and-a-half on a show, so we can start the creative process in plenty of time.”

On “The Sing Off,” Darren Langer is head gaffer, Brian Freidin best boy, Jason Uchita lead tech and Davey George the Atomic lead tech. For the Emmy Awards Darran Webb was head gaffer and Brad Hafer, Darren Langer and J.P. Gabriel the gaffers.
