AURALEX TAKES A BITE OUT OF ACOUSTICS AT THE BIG FISH GRILL

GLEN MILLS, PENNSYLVANIA – Auralex Acoustics, Inc., the industry leader in innovative sound control solutions, recently ordered up some acoustics at the Big Fish Grill, a premier casual-dining seafood restaurant with locations in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Both feature Auralex T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles to help absorb additional sound energy throughout the busy, noisy restaurants, making speech intelligibility clearer.

In the Big Fish Grill’s original location in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Auralex’s T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles were sporadically installed throughout the ceiling of the establishment. When it came time to open up a second location, the owners of restaurant chain called upon Steve Taylor of MusicPro Marketing, an independent sales and marketing firm representing music and professional audio/video equipment manufacturers, to acoustically treat the new location. As an Auralex rep, Taylor once again recommended Auralex’s T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles for the new space, but this time throughout the entire ceiling.

A total of 350 black T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles were installed throughout the space. The black ceiling serves as an indiscrete blank canvas that does not distract from the nautical theme of the restaurant, as it features several large hanging fish, suspended from the ceiling.

Drop-tile ceiling tiles are traditionally used for visually blocking unsightly HVAC systems, wiring, insulation and other obstacles above the grid work. Unfortunately, most ceiling tiles do not meet the acoustical requirements for critical listening environments. Many of the commercially available ceiling tiles are fairly reflective at low, mid and high frequencies.

Auralex T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles are a full line of fiberglass ceiling tiles that offer great aesthetic qualities with absorption coefficients that are 20 to 45 percent higher than standard ceiling tiles. The two standard sizes are 23.875″ x 23.875″ and 23.875″ x 47.875″ for standard 2′x2′ or 2′x4′ grids. Each panel is 1″ thick and is supplied with a fabric scrim on the face of the panel. Standard colors are white and black, with custom colors available upon request.

Founded in 1997 by brothers Norman and Eric Sugrue, Delaware’s Big Fish Grill has become one of the premier spots for casual dining in the region. A unique blend of original recipes, must-have favorites and affordable prices have resulted in a dedicated following, one that has earned the restaurant numerous “Best Seafood at the Beach” awards by Delaware Today magazine. Due to the overwhelming success of the original, the Sugrue brothers opened the new Pennsylvania location earlier this year.

Reno, USA: Bright Technologies Inc., developer of advanced technology for shared media, has announced that SGO, provider of high-end solutions for the post-production and broadcast industries, has made an agreement to support the Company’s BrightClip® intelligent data recording technology on Mistika – SGO’s powerful post-production system. Prysm’s Digital Mannequin Selected to Help Create Immersive Runway Experience at Honeywell Aerospace’s NBAA Booth

Five Life-Size Digital Mannequins Bring Honeywell Aerospace’s Customers and Technology to Life at the 2011 National Business Aviation Association Annual Meeting & Conference

San Jose, CA- October 27- Digital display innovator, Prysm, announced earlier this month that the company’s Digital Mannequin displays were selected to enhance the Honeywell Aerospace in-booth experience during the 2011 National Business Aviation Association Annual Meeting & Conference that took place in Las Vegas, NV on October 10-12. Powered by Prysm’s revolutionary Laser Phosphor Display (LPD) technology, five Digital Mannequins standing seven-feet tall brought Honeywell Aerospace’s customers and technology to life with brilliant, high-definition video displays during the business aviation industry’s largest tradeshow.

“We are thrilled to have partnered with Honeywell Aerospace and its agency The Brand Experience for such an innovative project,” said Prysm’s co-founder and CEO Amit Jain. “This is a true testament to the quality and capabilities of Prysm’s display solution.”

During the show, Prysm’s Digital Mannequins were used as valuable sales tools bringing various Honeywell Aerospace products to life with stunning imagery and product videos. Each Digital Mannequin was used as a stand-alone presentation tool; designed with a custom touchpad interface controlled by the sales reps, the display on any tower could be easily changed to exhibit one of sixteen Honeywell Aerospace product presentations. As the sales reps met with attendees and told the story of the various Honeywell Aerospace products, the Digital Mannequins helped illustrate the product stories with short video presentations that include stats, pictures and design details.

“Using five of Prysm’s Digital Mannequins, we were able to create an immersive video experience where the audience actually felt like they are standing on the runway,” said Dale Tesmond, CEO of The Brand Experience, who provided both creative direction and executive production for the experience. “Working with teams from Prysm, 3Stage Design for the technology setup and design, and Sandlot Pictures for the display content, we’ve created an un-paralleled display that the Honeywell team is thrilled with.”

Additionally, the Digital Mannequin’s attracted and engaged audiences to the Honeywell Aerospace booth. At various times during the conference all five displays were synced together and streamed short videos depicting the everyday life of Honeywell Aerospace customers: from business jet pilots, to maintenance teams and FAA controllers.

Prysm’s LPD solutions break away from traditional display technologies by offering freeform flexibility, long-lasting performance, life-like, life-size and HD imagery that captivates audiences in any setting. Built on solid-state lasers that deliver brilliant image quality and the fastest video content, Prysm’s displays provide striking video viewable from 178-degrees. Running off of a standard 110V outlet and using up to 75% less power than traditional backlit or projection technology-based products, Prysm’s displays create high impact brand experiences without the need for special power or cooling infrastructure.

About Prysm:

Prysm, Inc. has invented a new display platform based on the Laser Phosphor Display (LPD) technology that it owns entirely. LPD is a large format freeform display platform that can be organized in any size or shape to support a wide range of complete solutions for a variety of commercial markets. When compared to traditional technologies, LPD offers brilliant life-like and life-size displays which deliver truly immersive experiences, while offering the lowest cost of ownership and meeting the highest standards of environmental impact. Prysm is a privately held company based in San Jose, California with sales offices in New York, San Jose, London and Dubai.

Draper Announces Screen Tensioning Improvements

Draper, Inc., has announced a significant improvement in the company’s tab tensioned motorized projection screens.

Every Draper tab tensioned screen surface (including the tabs) is now CNC cut as a single piece, and the tabs are then folded and RF welded. The result is a much stronger tab with no possibility of separation.

“Making a tab tensioned surface in this manner eliminates the puckering that has characterized the edges of tab tensioned screens made by Draper and other manufacturers for years,” according to Draper, Inc. President John Pidgeon in a letter announcing the improvement to Draper dealers. “Prior to making this decision, we cycled a tab tensioned screen made in this manner over 30,000 times with no tab failure.”

With the change comes an upgraded warranty. Draper now warrants all its tab tensioned screens against tab separation for five years from date of manufacture.

For more information, and photos comparing the tensioning systems, visit the Draper company blog at http://blog.draperinc.com.

Earthworks Redesigns DP30/C Drum Periscope Microphone

November 2, 2011, Milford, NH – Earthworks has unveiled the new and improved DP30/C Drum Periscope cardioid microphone. After many recommendations from front of house engineers and drummers from all over the globe, the redesigned DP30/C features a thicker and more rugged gooseneck that will stay in place even when the snare or toms are struck extremely hard. Once the durable microphone head is placed in the “sweet spot”, drummers will not have to worry about the DP30/C migrating once they commence.

The new DP30/C maintains the same sound quality and craftsmanship of the original. The microphone capsule housing is designed to protect the microphone capsule and withstand a direct hit from a drumstick. The electronics are housed in a cylindrical tube attached to the end of the gooseneck and provides a high level, low impedance output that will prevent radio frequency interference.

The DP30/C has an incredibly fast impulse response that will allow the microphone to capture the full detail of the attack, while its short diaphragm settling time will allow you to hear a full bodied sound with subtle details that other microphones miss. The DP30/C will handle sound levels up to 145dB SPL with no audible distortion and its heavy construction will enable it to withstand the punishment of the road.

“All of our mics, including the DP30/C, are sold with a 15 year warranty” states Bill Norton, Earthworks Inc, COO, “and we also custom build the very robust RM1 which is the rim mounted mic holder that can be purchased along with the DP30/C from any of our Authorized Earthworks dealers.”

For additional information on this microphone and others by Earthworks, visit the company online at www.earthworksaudio.com.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1™ Console Creates the Perfect Feeling

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom – Chart-topping indie pop band, The Feeling, has completed a year of predominantly club dates and boutique festivals, allowing its sound engineers Jon Sword and Andy Greenwood to put HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1 digital desk through an arduous duty cycle, in which it has performed flawlessly.

The band has been playing through existing house systems, and while venues such as the O2 Academies and Nottingham Rock City have fortunately been pre-fitted with Sword’s favoured Soundcraft Vi6 or Vi4 FOH desk, the production crew have been carrying their own monitor and backline setup.

The goal, according to tour manager and FOH engineer Sword, was, “Fast setup and ease of installation for the stripped-down shows without having to disrupt these existing house setups.”

Andy Greenwood confirmed, “We have enjoyed the use of a Vi1 for most of this year now—its compact footprint has been perfect for the smaller shows, and it is without doubt my favourite monitor desk. Having had considerable experience using the Vi4 and Vi6 over the last few years, the transition to the Vi1 was seamless. I have always found the Vi range to be ‘intuitive’ and the first time I saw a Vi1 I knew I would be happy to use this platform at a show.”

His faith was exemplified perfectly on the club dates. “We had the same two support bands each night so we set up a show file for them and allowed the local house engineer to operate the desk. Each day I would show the local guy the desk, explain a few basic functions and leave them to it. In 100 percent of cases, the local engineers reported that not only had they enjoyed using the Vi1 but had experienced no problems whatsoever.”

After working with the band for three years, Andy Greenwood knows just how audio-savvy the five musicians are.

“They are absolute devotees of Soundcraft,” he confirmed. “Historically, they were always against digital desks until they started using the Vi range, and to this date it is the only digital desk they are prepared to use.”

Aside from an excellent preamp, which always holds its gain structure, Andy Greenwood singled out some other cool features of the desk. “Principally there is the general layout, with its large touchscreen, minimal clutter and colour coding system which makes it very easy to ‘see where you are’ and at a glance assess EQ’s, Dynamics, sends, etc. for multiple channels; this is very handy for a monitor desk.

“Another useful feature is the ability to quickly set up user-defined pages for inputs and outputs thus enabling the simplification of stage patching and allowing the grouping of items that are used the most; this reduces the need to constantly switch between layers on the desk.”

All the band (apart from lead singer Dan Gillespie) are on IEM’s and Andy says that the inclusion of two dedicated monitor busses, “makes it very simple to jump between listening to a wedge mix or an IEM mix.”

Meanwhile, when Andy Greenwood hasn’t commandeered the Vi1 in Monitor World, veteran sound engineer Jon Sword has been using it on corporate shows and festivals at front-of-house.

He also took it out recently with Kele Okereke from Bloc Party and with Sophie Ellis-Bextor. “During the whole of this year I have used the desk in every conceivable format. I have used it 30 or 40 times as a FOH board — and because it’s so versatile I can do everything on it,” Sword said.

With regard to The Feeling tour, Sword stated, “Having not been on a Vi6 for a while I was able to write new show files—I have different styles of shows and have created different files to suit the type of event; it sounds brilliant because the Feeling sound has changed, with more emphasis now on hard disk tracks.

“The great thing about the Vi platform is that it never tells you how to use it — it leaves you to find your own way.”
