Christie’s EGG Concept Moves Simulation and Virtual Training Beyond the Edge

4K Resolution Virtual Sand Table
Proven to provide superior results, this ultra-high resolution sand table offers situational awareness combined with the interactivity of data in rich detail, allowing users to safely interact with the virtual content on screen – in this case, aerial photography mapped to simulated terrain. The result is a superior interactive experience that offers the added advantage of informative feedback and computer-based coaching during the exercise. The display uses a Christie D4K35 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution 3-chip DLP® projector delivering 32,500 ANSI lumens, powered by a Christie Spyder X20 video processor. The kiosks are context-specific and allow for individual contributions to the main 4K display.
Stereoscopic Collimated Display
Supporting growing interest in stereoscopic visuals for simulation and training tasks where depth of field is key, the Christie 3D stereo collimated display features an infinite focal plane, so that the eyes can focus closer to infinity – a much more realistic response in the simulated environment. Collimation with 3D projection results in a more realistic out the window display that provides accurate positional information for both near and distant objects. Display is powered by four Christie Mirage WU-L projectors and delivers high resolution and pixel density, with a single-viewpoint perspective. Stereoscopic collimated display applications would benefit boom operator training, driving simulators, and crane operation, as examples.
60 /120HZ High Speed Comparison
A unique, side-by-side demonstration of images projected at 120HZ versus 60HZ, illustrating the accuracy and clarity of higher update rates projection, in which Christie is recognized as the industry leader. Higher update rates offer sharper images with reduced motion artifacts. The display is powered by two dual-input Christie Matrix StIM LED projectors, with content and database provided by strategic partner MetaVR.
Personal Immersive Environment (PIE)
Composed of Christie FHD551-X HD LCD flat panels, the Christie PIE concept features a three-panel arrangement in portrait mode for a roughly 90 degree FOV. Additional flat panels are added to increase the FOV up to as much as 270 degrees. Easily flipped into landscape to suit the user’s needs, it is a low-cost faceted simulation display system that is perfect for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) training, as well as ship bridges and air traffic control.
Megapixel Display Wall
More is better, and this high-performance video wall, matched with a Christie Spyder X20 video processor proves it. HARMAN’s Soundcraft® Si Compact 32 Console Allows Students To Take Control At Fort Zumwalt West High School

O’FALLON, Missouri — In order to accommodate the musicals, concerts, dance recitals, talent shows and much more that it holds throughout the academic year, Fort Zumwalt West High School in Missouri recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Compact 32 audio mixing console.

Tim Croghan, Auditorium Manager for the school, has been working with the Fort Zumwalt School District for 20 years and helped design and build the auditorium and sound system, and was looking to upgrade from the original analog sound board the school was using. Based on his positive experience with previous Soundcraft products, Croghan decided the Si Compact 32 was an ideal fit.

Croghan chose the Si Compact 32 for many reasons, including the console’s flexibility for the variety of school events. “We like to do production work, mix our own sound effects and record the chorus and bands for live CD’s. Another great use is to mix songs together for football games and sporting events. We simply have an endless amount of options,” he said.

Most of the time, however, the students are the ones operating the console. “It’s the perfect machine to teach to the students. When we got it, the kids were learning faster than I could and ended up teaching me a few things,” Croghan said with a laugh. The students, usually around 15 or 16 years old, enjoy working directly with the console and immediately seeing the results of their work. “It’s great because you don’t need a real in-depth concept of audio production; for a student, to be able to move the fader up and down, gives them the feeling of control we want them to have.”

When working on production for different events, Croghan mentioned that they use the Si Compact as a creative tool as well. “We can have sound effects called by the director just like a lighting effect. Everything that we do can be tied into the script, and we can create actual cues and microphone levels based on what the director wants,” he said.

“Everything about the board is perfect for what we need,” Croghan added. “It allows the kids to have the freedom to operate, and Soundcraft gives us the security of having a reliable console that doesn’t wear or break down. There are so many more outputs than we’re used to, and we are still exploring the ways that we can do more. Overall the board is so much cleaner and crisper.”

Croghan is thrilled the students have the chance to use such a high-end product in a school setting. During a recent Battle of the Bands event, Croghan was shocked to see the ability of the groups to manipulate the settings to find the sound they wanted to achieve, and how they were able to make it happen with very little help.

“Having the Si Compact allows our program to keep growing and expanding not only physically but through music education as well. The console gives us so much opportunity and we are all excited to see the students continue to explore and continue to thrive through the opportunities we give them,” Croghan summed up.

HARMAN’s Studer Announces More Studer Broadcast Academy Training for Freelance and In-House Engineers

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom — Building on its overwhelmingly successful Broadcast Academy program, HARMAN’s Studer has announced additional free half-day Studer Broadcast Academy introductory training sessions on its Vista and OnAir digital consoles. The sessions will be held at the Soundcraft Studer premises in Hertfordshire, and will include instruction on the new Vista 9, Vista 5 M2, OnAir 1500 and OnAir 3000 desks.

Electrosonic’s AV Expertise Showcased In Two Thea Award-Winning Projects

Electrosonic is proud to have participated once again in several projects that have captured Thea Awards for Outstanding Achievement presented by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA). Electrosonic, an international audio-visual company, played a key role in both “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue” at Disneyland (cited in the Attraction Refresh category) and “Crane Dance” at Resorts World Sentosa (named in the Show Spectacular category).

Winners of the 18th annual Thea Awards were announced November 15 at the IAAPA trade show in Orlando; the awards will be presented March 17, 2012 at a gala ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

The Thea Awards recognize and honor excellence in creating outstanding visitor experiences, attractions, exhibits and places. TEA is the only international non-profit association representing the world’s leading creators, developers, designers and producers of compelling content for these venues.

Electrosonic has worked consistently with Disney on many of their projects around the world. Working closely with design engineers at Walt Disney Imagineering in Burbank, Electrosonic played a pivotal role as systems integrator on the revamped “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue” project, providing fabrication, installation and termination of the low-voltage AV, FX and show control systems. Steve Calver was Electrosonic’s project manager and Les Hill the systems sales consultant.

The Thea Awards nominating committee noted that “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue” is a hit with the extremely loyal “Star Wars” fan base, which was first drawn to the film-based analog version of the simulator ride when it debuted in 1987. Today, “Star Tours: The Adventures Continue” features new 3D digital media systems for a breakthrough experience with a unique branching story structure offering multiple destinations and characters. “This non-traditional storytelling device evokes curiosity by providing 54 potential show experiences,” the committee said. “Image capture systems are used to integrate riders into the varied story branches. All of this is fed into multiple motion programs designed for each random sequence, creating a multiplicity of kinetics for the 54 distinct profiles and unique real-time guest integrations.”

In addition to systems engineering, installation and commissioning, Electrosonic also provides creative technical Design Consulting services to help clients realize their creative vision. For the “Crane Dance” show at Resorts World Sentosa, Electrosonic served as the technical design consultant working directly with creative show designer Jeremy Railton at Entertainment Design Corporation (EDC). Leading the creative and technical design process for EDC was Mark Thomas of On Track Themes whom Electrosonic has worked with for many years on multiple themed entertainment projects around the world.

Steve Coe, one of Electrosonic’s senior design consultants, designed and specified the elaborate Renkus-Heinz audio system, Coolux Pandoras Box video playback system and Medialon show control for this attraction. “This unique application for technology required an out-of-the-box approach to a system design,” says Coe. “There are many technical challenges with this type of attraction and using the right tool for the right job is crtical.”

Billed as the largest animatronic attraction in the world, “Crane Dance” is a 10-minute public performance piece staged daily on the WaterFront. It features a pair of huge mechanical cranes whose courtship and budding love for each other transform them into real birds. The attraction combines groundbreaking audio and visual technologies with amazing light and water effects. Each hydraulically-powered mechanical crane weighs 80 tons and operates in six axes of movement.

Producer Alex Silva Chooses Prism Sound Conversion For Herbert Gronemeyer’s Live DVD Mix

EMI Music Germany is about to release Live In Leipzig, a DVD that captures the performance of legendary German pop star Herbert Gronemeyer during his recent Schiffverkehr tour.

This major project, which was filmed in one evening, encompasses Gronemeyer’s ‘warts and all’ approach to live DVDs by allowing the viewer to see and hear the concert as it really was.

“What is on the DVD is 100% pure,” says producer Alex Silva who was responsible for mixing the audio. “As nothing was going to be repaired or fixed in the mix, everyone had to bring their A-game to the concert, which certainly made for an adrenaline filled evening behind the scenes. Of course there were problems – with a live event a lot can go wrong and technically things often do. For this project we had to contend with heavy rainfall on the crowd microphones (and there was a lot of rain) to interference on the 128 radio mics – not to mention things that were best left in the bar after the gig!”

Originally from Cardiff, Alex Silva has been part of Gronemeyer’s production team for nearly 15 years. He began his career in record production under the direction of former Eurythmics artist and producer Dave Stewart and has subsequently worked with many international artists including Texas, Mick Jagger, Daryll Hall, Manic Street Preachers, Suede and Jon Bon Jovi.

For the Live in Leipzig project, Silva and Gronemeyer chose to mix at Hansa Studios in Germany, in conjunction with Michael Ilbert. Integral to the sound of the mix was Prism Sound conversion. Silva used a Prism Sound ADA-8XR multichannel AD/DA converter with a Pro Tools digital interface option as a replacement for 192 and 96 IOs that come as standard on a Pro Tools system.

“We chose Prism Sound conversion for its sound quality and also for its versatility.” Silva explains. “We used the unit as our converter while transferring the multitrack audio from one Pro Tools system to another to create the 5.1 mix. We also used it for the analogue fold-down for the stereo mix. The converter did everything I had hoped for and I was very happy with the results.”

As with any live recording, preparation is key to its success and this project was no exception.

“My production technique in this situation really happens in the rehearsal process,” Alex Silva says. “Technically there was a lot of preparation for these shows and artistically the songs had to be re-worked to suit a stadium environment. Basically, I push things as far as possible without tiring everyone’s patience.”

After 14 years of collaboration, Silva and Gronemeyer have developed a close relationship that enables them to know how the other will react and think during the recording and mixing process.

“We have our own studio, which is based around an API board and a Pro Tools system, plus we also have a lot of vintage mic pre’s and outboard equipment such as Helios, D. W Fern and ADL, and a great collection of microphones including Altec, RCA, Telefunken and Coles,” Silva says. “Part of my work is to challenge the artist creatively and this is something that Herbert excels at. He has a gift for letting go and allowing his songs to evolve without fear. It is very liberating for a producer to feel trusted and be allowed to explore a song’s potential. Herbert has an amazing gut feeling for things and I know I can reply on his opinion. For me, that is the mark of a truly great artist.”
