International House of Prayer Builds Powerful Internet Streaming Ministry With Haivision’s KulaByte H.264 Encoders

Ministry Connects Locations, Delivers Broadcast Feeds, and Fuels Internet Media Portals Using Multiple Haivision Technologies

MONTREAL and CHICAGO — Nov. 8, 2011 — Haivision today announced that the International House of Prayer (IHOP) is expanding its sophisticated 24/7 Web streaming ministry with Haivision’s KulaByte live Internet video encoders. The new systems complement the established Haivision video encoding technology (including hai1000 and Makito(TM) products) by providing direct to Internet high-definition (HD) streaming capability. Based in Kansas City, Mo., IHOP relies on Haivision encoding of HD video using the H.264 compression standard for live Internet streaming of its prayer room services, as well as for high-quality video feeds between IHOP University (IHOPU), numerous other live ministry event locations, and broadcast centers.

As a central component of IHOP’s global ministry, the prayer room in Kansas City operates around the clock with 12 two-hour prayer meetings conducted every day. In order to stream the prayer meetings live to the IHOP website with HD video quality, IHOP recently upgraded its obsolete legacy encoding platform to Haivision’s KulaByte H.264 encoders. The KulaByte encoders provide ultra-efficient compression of HD video to H.264 combined with exacting bandwidth control to maximize video quality over fixed bandwidth connections for video delivery to both Flash(R) and HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) based websites.

IHOP has also installed other Haivision video encoding technology to support its diverse operational footprint. IHOP provides a direct, high-quality live stream of the prayer room to GOD TV, an international Christian television network that broadcasts the prayer room at various times during the day, in addition to live streaming on its own website. IHOP is currently supplying the stream via point-to-point satellite links between Kansas City, Washington, D.C., and the GOD TV broadcast facility in Jerusalem. To reduce related transmission costs, IHOP has installed the Mako(TM) hai1000 encoder systems that allow the ministry to transition the GOD TV connections to much lower cost public Internet connections.

“Our online services are an essential part of our ministry, and we are all 100 percent committed to making sure that our live Web stream never goes down. That’s why it’s essential that we choose encoding equipment with absolute, bullet-proof reliability,” said Ari Burt, head of online video for IHOP. “The Haivision H.264 encoding solutions provide this reliability as well as top-notch quality for Internet streaming of HD content, and we have been very impressed not only with the responsiveness of the Haivision customer service team but also the superior Web interface.”

In addition to Internet streaming and global distribution of the prayer room feeds, IHOP relies on Haivision solutions to backhaul live event coverage from its conference center and various locations throughout the IHOPU campus to the master control center. IHOP deploys Haivision’s high performance Makito H.264 HD encoders at event sources, decodes the signals in the master control, routes the signals through production, and then sends the HD video on to the KulaByte encoders for streaming to the IHOP website. One such recent event, a youth conference called One Thing, brought 130,000 unique visitors to the IHOP website. In another example, IHOP used the point-to-point system to stream live coverage of Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s recent “The Response” prayer event, pushing more than 20 gigs per second over the ministry’s Akamai content delivery network.

“With so many different facilities streaming content, there will always be issues with how to centralize the content and stream it as efficiently as possible,” added Burt. “The Haivision encoders provide the low latency we need to ensure that the system also performs to our high quality standards.”

“IHOP is a textbook case of a house of worship that is effectively leveraging advanced Internet streaming technologies to spread its message to the widest-possible audience. The numbers speak for themselves: every month, the IHOP prayer room stream receives more than 120,000 unique hits,” said Mirko Wicha, president and CEO of Haivision. “IHOP is just one more example of how Haivision is delivering end-to-end technologies to address the diverse media distribution needs of houses of worship.”

Yakima Valley SunDome Boosts Sound with Community R-Series Loudspeakers

Located in Central Washington’s State Fair Park, the 6,195-seat Yakima Valley SunDome is an impressive stadium that hosts touring concerts, basketball, wrestling and volleyball tournaments, truck-pulls, trade shows and other regional events.

As Leo Lee, owner and General Manager of Sousley Sound & Communications explains, the SunDome’s sound system was historically a bit of an Achilles Heel for the venue. “The SunDome was built in the 1990s, and at the time it was fairly typical to install center-cluster loudspeaker systems in domed stadiums,” he says. “Most center-cluster technology isn’t able to meet the current audio demands for a venue like the SunDome.” As Lee observes, to achieve the volume levels they needed, the cluster system was throwing sound too far, causing major reverberation problems within the SunDome’s largely concrete environment.

Sousley Sound & Communications was contracted by the city of Yakima to design and install a new distributed audio system capable of providing the zoned coverage needed for the venue’s various events, without compromising speech intelligibility or musicality. The newly commissioned system includes 24 Community R-Series Loudspeakers and six iHP Series dual-15″ subwoofers. The weather-resistant R-series, a popular choice for outdoor venues, is also frequently selected by designers for indoor arenas and other reverberant spaces because of its sound projection, pattern control, exceptional clarity and high quality music reproduction.

The loudspeakers are powered by 13 Ashly Audio amplifiers, with matrix routing and configuration presets provided by Ashly Protea DSPs. In addition, the system was the first installation to utilize Community’s new dSPEC 226 Loudspeaker Processor. dSPEC is an Ethernet-controlled processor that provides the standard functions expected of a high-quality DSP, while implementing a number of unique features to speed up the process of system configuration, multi-level limiter setting, and system commissioning. Among these is the first commercial-audio application of RealSoundLab’s CONEQ technology. Effectively a high-resolution tuning tool, as implemented in dSPEC, CONEQ processing provides loudspeaker presets that optimize frequency response while making each speaker’s sound-field more consistent. In practice, the dSPEC features enabled the various speaker types within a difficult venue to be quickly optimized, balanced, and commissioned.

Lee reports that the new Community system works exactly as it was designed and that everyone involved is very happy with the sound quality. “We’ve received many accolades about the new audio system,” he says. “You can hear every word clearly no matter where you sit in the arena. The sound distribution is exceptionally even. We’re very pleased, and more importantly, the SunDome management is very pleased.”

Acoustics First reveals the PhaseFOAM™ Acoustical System

Acoustics First PhaseFOAM™ for critical listening environments

Acoustics First PhaseFOAM™ for critical listening environments

If you want a kit to tell you how to design the acoustics in your space, DON’T CLICK THIS LINK: www.PhaseFOAM.com

The principals of Acoustics First® have been in the acoustics arena since the seventies when they introduced industrial foam as an acoustic solution for recording studios. Back then, there were neither acoustics companies nor any off the shelf acoustic materials. Everything had to be built by hand. Since then, many choices have appeared – Pre-manufactured acoustical panels, thermoformed diffusers, and many single solution room kits. While kits are convenient and give reasonable results, they can’t possibly be an exact match for your room. Just as no two snowflakes are alike; no two rooms sonically the identical. When it comes to room acoustics, there is no ‘one size fits all’. All rooms are different, so we have created the PhaseFOAM™ acoustical system to allow you, the designer, to tune your room the way you want it to sound.

Acoustics First® introduces the first acoustical system that does not require you to have specific room dimensions. This acoustical system is based on two seemingly simple, but versatile, boxes of acoustical foam. You can use these basic building blocks to create an acoustical environment to suit your needs. PhaseFOAM™ Box A contains absorptive acoustical foam tiles and PhaseFOAM™ Box B contains modular bass traps.

If you have the knowledge, ability and confidence to design your own sound, CLICK THIS LINK: www.PhaseFOAM.com

We trust you to be the best judge of your acoustics!

Gavin DeGraw and David Cook Take Clay Paky Sharpys and grandMA2 light On Nationwide Tour

David Cook

David Cook

Singer-songwriters Gavin DeGraw and David Cook, the latter an “American Idol” winner, are co-headlining a U.S. tour and Clay Paky Sharpys and a grandMA2 light are going along for the ride. A.C.T Lighting is the North American distributor of Clay Paky fixtures and the grandMA2.

DeGraw and Cook plan to visit 22 cities on a continental swing that commenced October 9. DeGraw is performing songs from his fourth album, “Sweeter,” and Cook appears in support of his most recent album, “This Loud Morning.”

Lighting designer/director Scott Warner is responsible for maximizing a limited lighting rig so all the bands appearing with DeGraw and Cook have a unique look. He also serves as the programmer and operator for the tour bands.

Instead of using conventional vertical trusses, Warner opted to create a three-level wall of truss at the back of the stage. “With three levels it looks like I have three layers of light,” he explains. “It gives me a nice wall of lights. On the top level I have nine Sharpys, and I frame the bands with them.

“They’re a fantastic light, and I love that I can instantly move them around so if something is sounding cool on stage, I can go to it,” he continues. “The Sharpys are super bright – in fact, I have to watch where I aim them so I don’t burn a hole in the back of an amplifier! I’ve never used Clay Paky lights before, so the Sharpys are a great introduction. The bands love them too – during sound checks everyone comments on them. They call them ‘lasers’!”

Warner is also a first-time grandMA2 user. He’s using the console to control not only the Clay Paky Sharpys but also an array of Robe REDWash, Martin 700, Atomic Strobes and Lowel Omni lights.

“I saw the grandMA2 Light at LDI and loved the look – it’s a great-looking console and people come up to me to say how cool it is. It’s also very fast; I don’t have to wait for anything. I like the touch control and bump buttons. It feels good running the show, more fun – like sitting at a Mac computer.” He also likes having access to more DMX universes on the grandMA2 Light.

About A.C.T Lighting

A leading importer and distributor of lighting products, A.C.T Lighting, Inc. strives to identify future trends and cutting-edge products, and stock, sell and support their inventory. The company provides superior customer service and value for money to all of its clients.

Narrow-Bezel, 55-inch LCD MDT551S Monitor Expands Mitsubishi Electric’s High-End Flat Panel Display Options

IRVINE, Calif., November 8, 2011 — Mitsubishi Electric announces the release of its narrow-bezel, 55-inch monitor (MDT551S). This latest addition to its high-end line is designed for video conferencing, gaming, retail kiosks, digital signage and other applications needing robust, long-lasting static or interactive display monitors. Mitsubishi’s new MDT551S brings video to life with dynamic and customizable advertising, exciting welcome messages, and vital, up-to-the-minute news and information. Its sleek, modern, brushed aluminum design will also stand out in any conference room as a focal point of digital display.

“Our new narrow bezel monitor makes any display more attractive and vibrant,” said Brandon Tarnow, brand manager, Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America, Inc. “Mitsubishi has the right size monitor to fit most applications or locations.”

Installation versatility is engineered into every monitor: Inputs range from DVI-D, D-Sub 15 and HDMI™ as well as DisplayPort™. The MDT551S features an optional CAT5 receiver and transmitter box, and uses Mitsubishi’s own networking software for remote management. It offers cutting-edge data processing and technology in an attractive modern design for flexibility and reliability.

The MDT551S streamlines installation and reduces the number of necessary components with two built-in, 10-watt speakers for on-the-fly audio. Connectivity options include DisplayPort™ for clear, crisp video and audio transmission over a single cable, and RJ45 LAN support, so a connected monitor can be controlled from remote locations over a network.

Mitsubishi’s new MDT551S monitor also offers optional single- and multi-touch screen interactivity, one of the easiest PC interfaces to use. With the optional touch screen interface, the monitor recognizes up to 36 distinct actuation points, including touch, gesturing, squeezing and pinching. This makes computing resources more available to untrained or disabled computer users.

The 55-inch monitor also eliminates cable clutter with an optional CAT5 receiver that keeps image quality consistent, even with cable lengths of up to 500 feet (150 meters). Video and RS-485 serial-control signals can be simultaneously delivered over the same CAT5 cable, eliminating the need for a separate, distance-limiting serial-control cable. Users can also daisy chain up to three monitors, making content delivery easy and more efficient.

“Mitsubishi makes robust, reliable LCD monitors that are used in a wide range of environments,” said James Chan, vice president, marketing, Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America, Inc. “We listened to market feedback and created the narrow-bezel 55-inch to give even more installation potential to our channel partners.”
