HARMAN Audio System Highlights Major Sound Upgrade at Historic Lerner Theatre

Vista AV recently upgraded the audio system at the historic Lerner Theatre with components from HARMAN’s AKG, Crown, JBL and Soundcraft.

ELKHART, Indiana — In a major overhaul of the 87-year-old Lerner Theatre in Elkhart, Indiana, audio integrator Vista AV recently completed a sound upgrade featuring components from HARMAN’s AKG, Crown, JBL and Soundcraft. The renovation added 6,000 square feet of meeting space, seating capacity and an expanded moveable stage.

The main theater area is outfitted with 20 JBL VERTEC® VT4887ADP-DA compact powered line array elements outfitted with JBL DrivePack® technology Crown-designed amplifier modules, as well as four SRX712M and six VRX915M stage monitors powered by Crown amplifiers. The existing theatre system was also supplemented with two JBL SRX718 powered subwoofers and three JBL AC18/26 compact loudspeakers. A host of AKG microphones including the D5, D40, P5, and P6 have also been added to the upgraded house system, while a Soundcraft Vi4 digital console was installed to handle both front of house and monitor mixing.

“This was a challenging installation because we were dealing with an existing historic structure that was not at all accommodating to modern technology,” stated Cyril Oake, Project Manager for Vista AV.

“Using the built-in Crown amplifier modules with the VT4887ADP-DA speakers allowed for fast rigging of the arrays and combination of the DP module and the JBL speakers not only provided a clean professional look for the install, but sonically met the needs of the facility,” added David Glass, Systems Designer for Vista AV.

The multipurpose room at Lerner Theatre includes 36 Control 26CT small-format ceiling speakers
powered by Crown CTs 4200 series amplifiers as well as a dedicated AKG WMS450 wireless microphone system.

“Quite a few of the other digital consoles have a long learning curve to get to know even the simplest of functions. With the Vi4’s Vistonics™ control interface, anyone who is familiar with an analog console can make adjustments. For a venue like the Lerner Theater this is a must because of the variety of acts that will be coming and going all the time. Sometimes even the simplest of things makes a difference. The smaller footprint of the Vi4 takes up less room in the auditorium so less seating area needs to be given up for the production location,” stated Glass.

Aviom Personal Mixers Take The Stage During New World Center’s Pulse Nightclub Events

MIAMI, NOVEMBER 4, 2011—Long before the curtains were first raised in Miami Beach’s New World Center, expectations were high that it would be a spectacular educational and performance facility, home to the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy. While bringing to life its mission of becoming a destination for creativity and inspiration, the Center also debuted as a cultural icon, introducing Pulse, a unique spin on the orchestral experience within a nightclub setting. To help performers get the best monitor mixes in a hall where the acoustics are quite reverberant, Pro Sound and Video, a Miami-based company that specializes in providing high quality, technology solutions for audio, video, theater, club and broadcast projects, equipped the New World Center with an Aviom Pro16® personal mixing system.Aviom Pro16 Mixer New World Center Pulse Stage

Early in the New World Center’s first season, Aviom’s Personal Mixers played an important role on stage in performances by the prestigious New World Symphony and even more so during Pulse performances, when the concert hall transitioned into a nightclub and New World Symphony Fellows and a classically-trained DJ, Mason Bates, shared the stage.

“The intent behind the New World Center was to create the most technically sophisticated concert hall in North America,” says Brad Gallagher, managing director, Pro Sound and Video. “In a symphonic building, with such a long RT60, the sound that engineers hear from a reference monitor is going to be vastly different from what the musicians are hearing on stage. With so many elements taking place at once, the Aviom Personal Mixers are an absolutely ideal solution.”

Since the hall was designed with a NC-15 noise criterion, there is a virtually pure environment for the natural acoustics of the room. Though beautiful to listeners, the acoustics do pose some issues when monitoring. “The nominal reverb time of the room is 1.5 seconds, so when the Aviom A-16II Personal Mixers are used with headphones or in-ears, it allows us to totally eliminate any unnecessary stage volume, while keeping our options flexible for on-stage performances,” says Alan Miller, New World Center production technician and audio specialist.

Aviom Mixers New World Center PulseMiller introduced the Aviom personal mixers to the performers for the very first Pulse show, giving each musician the option to customize personal mixes, as they were tasked with performing live in this unique setting. Aviom A-16II Personal Mixers helped musicians overcome the challenges brought on by the instruments, ambiance and unique distances between performers, as DJ Mason Bates and the performers were located on stage lifts, while other performers were located on the hall’s satellite stages.

“During the first performance, three percussionists played a rather difficult piece on Djembes (skin-covered drums played with bare hands) that were positioned on different performance platforms throughout the hall,” says Miller. The platforms surround the stage with about 50 feet separating each and are between audience seating areas. “We recognized that the percussionists would need to hear each other clearly while competing with the late-night crowd noise, so Aviom A-16II Personal Mixers were the perfect solution. We also provided an A-16II to the orchestra conductor,” adds Miller.

The music selected for the venue’s second Pulse event required a completely different setup, with two soloists playing on separate performance platforms in exact synchronization with the full orchestra on stage. “The distance time delay and reverb would not allow us to do this setup without any monitoring, so this time I pulled out the A-16CS Control Surfaces to be used in conjunction with our A-16R Personal Mixers that are rack mounted in our monitor console desk unit,” says Miller. “The DigiCo D1 allowed us to send the signal to these A-16R units and then the output of the A-16R can be routed back to the console so I could send it to our wedge monitors.”

Designed for flexibility by audio consultants Acoustic Dimensions and Sonitus, the New World Center’s system includes Aviom A-16D Pro A-Net® Distributors that route to an RJ-45 patch panel at the hall’s backstage left audio racks. The patch panel then has A-Net lines that run virtually everywhere in the performance hall. The stage consists of 10 electro-mechanical stage lifts, with each lift having anywhere from one to four floor pockets that allow the crew access to audio, video and electrical panels attached to each stage. Cat-5 cabling that originates at the patch panel is run to each floor pocket, allowing Miller and the audio team to position the Aviom units just about anywhere on or off stage as needed for the performers, including the performance platforms that have full audio/data connectivity. The main DigiRack that is shared by the consoles has an Aviom D-16c A-Net Card that allows the audio team to take up to 16 outputs that are assigned on the consoles and send them through the Aviom system.

Dan Dugan Unveils E-3 Automatic Mixing Controller

The Dugan Model E-3 provides seamless automatic microphone mixing.

San Francisco, California — Dan Dugan Sound Design has introduced the Dugan Model E-3 Automatic Mixing Controller. The Model E-3 replaces the Model D-3 as Dugan’s top-of-the-line 8-channel automatic mixing controller with AES digital I/O. Through its interface with Dugan’s Model CP-2 control panel, the Model E-3 provides all the functions of the Model D-3 including the Dugan Speech System, the Dugan Music System, Dugan Gain Limiting and three automixing groups in a smaller and more economical box.

“The Model D-3 was our most versatile controller, but in the past few years advances in technology have made it possible to deliver lower latency, a smaller size and a lower price for the same capabilities,” said Dan Dugan. “We are passing these improvements on to our customers.”

AES3 Audio connections are made through a DB-25 connector; readily available cable squids can be used where XLR connectors are desired. I/O may also be switched to ADAT optical connectors, as in Dugan’s other E-series controllers. The E-3 can be operated from the Dugan Control Panel for Java (included in the purchase price), the Model CP-2 physical control panel (optional; two rack unit height) or the mute and bypass buttons on the E-3’s front panel. To make larger systems, the Model E-3 links with all other digital Dugans, including the Models D-2, D-3, E, E-1 and Dugan-MY16. Rack mounting accessories are included to mount a single unit, and two units may be mounted side by side in a single rack space.

Christie® today announced that Landmark Cinemas has chosen Christie’s range of digital cinema projection solutions for 100-plus screens throughout Western Canada and the Yukon.
The new projection solution at Landmark will include a range of DCI-compliant Christie Solaria™ Series projectors, specifically the CP2200, CP2210 and CP2300 projectors, to be installed by King Cinema Services.

Tel Aviv, Israel, November 3, 2011 – YCD Multimedia, a global leader in providing smart digital media experiences to the retail business world, today announced that its digital signage software, C-nario Messenger, has been implemented in Moscow’s Center for Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons with Cerebral Palsy. C-nario Messenger, developed by C-nario, a company recently acquired by YCD, drives a digital signage network providing patients and their families with useful and entertaining information.

The center, which belongs to the Moscow municipality, provides medical, social and rehabilitation services to cerebral palsy patients and their families, based on the latest technologies and methodologies. Avilex, a provider of audio visual integration solutions, served as the concept designer and system integrator. YCD’s software serves as the distribution, management and content creation system.

The digital signage network comprises 10 Mitsubishi digital displays installed in different zones of the rehabilitation center (reception, floor halls, conference lobby and others). Content includes information about the center’s rehabilitation services, upcoming events, social programs, new developments in cerebral palsy treatment and rehabilitation, municipal news, live TV feeds and additional information. The digital signage also serves as an emergency announcement system. In addition to centralized content, each zone has unique information; menus are displayed in the cafeteria, bus schedules at reception, a calendar of events in the conference hall, etc.

A unique interactive application, installed in the reception area, allows employees to write announcements by hand, while the system “translates” these hand-written messages into displayed information. C-nario and Avilex developed the innovative application.

Joining JVC in 2000, Mueller held several positions including executive vice president and COO of JVC Professional Products Company and JVC U.S.A. Red TX’s New HARMAN Studer Vista 8 Console Records Michael Jackson Tribute Concert

CARDIFF, United Kingdom— Earlier this summer, broadcast sound specialist Red TX commissioned its new RED II mobile recording unit, which has been designed specifically to cater for 3D and 7.1 surround sound productions.

Based at Pinewood Studios, the truck was pressed immediately into service at a Linkin Park concert in Moscow’s Red Square, followed by the Download Festival and other high prestige events such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ worldwide launch of their new album in Cologne—which was filmed and broadcast live to 1,500 cinemas around the world. But most recently they recorded Michael Forever—the Michael Jackson Tribute Concert at Cardiff Millennium Stadium.

Equipped with a HARMAN Studer Vista 8 (as is their original RED I production vehicle), they are finding that Studer’s new SCore Live engine affords them a lot more flexibility than they have been accustomed to.

Said Red TX managing director, Ian Dyckhoff, “We have geared the new vehicle around 7.1 because it was becoming increasingly apparent that the requirements for panning were different from cinema 5.1. Also, by incorporating 3D in a fully redundant production vehicle, we are future-proofing it.”

The truck features the highest insulating specifications while the main studio area is a lead-lined, floating room within a room, equipped with active 7.1 surround sound monitoring and the SCore Live-powered Studer Vista 8. 96 x 24/96 remote mic amps are included as standard, with additional blocks of 48 (up to 240) available for larger projects. All microphone inputs are 24bit/96kHz with full DSP on every channel.

“We have used Studer for many years and have a great relationship with the company,” Dyckhoff said. “It’s also a widely-known platform and useful for workflow, since the BBC has adopted it as a standard, it is on various sound stages here at Pinewood and also in the Royal Opera House. We were very mindful of that.”

Deploying their existing Studer D21m digital I/O frames, with new MADI cards and three of the existing 48-way stage boxes (deployed in their portable flypacks), sound supervisor Ollie Nesham says that with so little time to soundcheck multiple act shows “Studer makes everything so much quicker. It’s a very reliable desk and the graphic control is excellent.”

He also highlighted the bonus of having the ‘Reconfig’ button at the point when they needed to plug in the third stage box. “The console is so flexible that we can add or remove stage boxes on the fly, reconfigure the console to suit with a single button press and all without disrupting the audio currently going through the desk. It’s a big bonus–this function is a really quick way of doing it.”

Taking splits from the FOH desk, Red TX’s main engineer Tim Summerhayes sent stereo and 5.1 feeds to the two TV units, using the Snapshot facility to recall 52 individual scenes

Once Red TX had painstakingly set up audience mics to capture the audience, they mixed 140 channels from the stage via 3 x 48-way stage racks (including eight returns), compressed down to 128 and recorded onto Pyramix.

Musical acts that participated in the event included the Jackson Brothers, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Alexandra Burke, Alien Ant Farm, Craig David, LaToya Jackson, Leona Lewis and Smokey Robinson. And while copyright issues blighted the prospect of live broadcast to around 30 countries throughout the world in 2D and 3D formats, it will now be broadcast at a later stage.

Finally, Ian Dyckhoff confirms that reality TV spectaculars such as XFactor and Strictly Come Dancing are also benefitting from having a Vista 8 in the new production unit. “It’s clear that the presence of Studer is winning us extra work,” he said, as he prepared RED II for its next mission—the opening night of the Coldplay European tour in Madrid.

Matrox Announces Support for Avid Media Composer 6 With Full Line of Matrox MXO2 I/O Devices and New Matrox Mojito MAX Card

MONTREAL — Nov. 3, 2011 — Matrox(R) Video Products Group today announced support for Avid(R) Media Composer(R) version 6 with the entire range of Matrox MXO2 I/O devices and the new Matrox Mojito(TM) MAX(TM) card. Not only do Matrox I/O products provide broadcast-quality input and output, they also lets users deliver H.264 files for the web, mobile devices, and Blu-ray up to five times faster than software alone, without sacrificing quality. Other important features include 10-bit hardware scaling, inexpensive HD monitoring with the exclusive Matrox HDMI Calibration Utility, and 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound monitoring using professional connections.

Not only does Matrox Mojito MAX provide broadcast-quality input and output for leading editing apps including Adobe(R) Creative Suite(R) 5.5 Production Premium, Apple(R) Final Cut Studio(R) and Final Cut Pro(R) X, as well as the new Avid(R) Media Composer(R) 6, it also lets users deliver H.264 files for the web, mobile devices, and Blu-ray up to five times faster than software alone without sacrificing quality. Other important features packed into this ¾-length PCIe card include 10-bit hardware scaling and inexpensive HD monitoring with the unique Matrox HDMI Calibration Utility.
